An old thread, but the ET article needs serious corrections. "Hindu" is simply a collective term for any non-Muslim/Christian/Sikh religion. It's a misnomer.

"urdu" was not historically known as Hindi. It was known as Hindustani and more previously Hindavi. Hindustan refers to northern subcontinent. Hindi is simply Hindustani used by the Brahmans using Devanagari script; wheras Urdu is Hindustani used by Muslims using the Nastaliq script.

Just like Punjabi. Two scripts, different religious speakers, same language.
