'Muslim women can't discard purdah for politics'

LUCKNOW: Soft spoken and mild-mannered Maulana Saidur Rehman Azmi Nadvi heads Nadva-tul Ulema, the biggest Islamic seminary in north India.

However, his tone hardens at the mere mention of women's reservation bill. He says politics makes an unlikely profession for well brought up 'khawateen'.

"Islam doesn't permit women to discard the purdah, deliver lectures in public (taqreer) and demand their due. They have clear guidelines to follow — stay at home in hijab, and take care of household chores. They are also free to get educated and serve the nation," he says, but is quick to rule out any compromise over their entry into politics.

"Contesting elections is by no means a cake walk. There's only one option for female aspirants — turn into 'mard' (man)," says the maulana, who is also a senior member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board.

Darul Uloom, Deoband, is severe in its chastisement of the worrying "un-Islamic behaviour' of politically oriented women. It had said the same thing five years ago while announcing a fatwa against women contesting elections.

why these guys always try to bring down women on the name of religon. if some lady of capable she should go ahead and do what she almighty has made her for... what is the point of enforcing her inside the 4 quaters of a home and just cook.

like many women are not good cooks and men are better same way many men are good cooks but not good politicians. if a women wants to be politician let her be

There are examples from Prophet's era where women went out & participated in out-of-home works... So these mullah's however highly-posted r wrong...

What islam asks is "division of labour",,, those who studied biology would understand this term well... In unicellular life forms, there's NO "Division of Labour"... As life forms become more advanced they start to get "Division of Labour" which means that different cells perform different duties & stick to their duties except few times.... Like stomach cells form acid & r NOT light sensing cells,,, while cells in eye do the job of light sensing & don't secrete acid... If any of these cells stop doing their job or start to do job of other cell type, we have a problem,,, like if eye cells stop sensing light person goes blind.... If acid-producing-cells of stomach stop producing acid & instead produce mucus, resulting case is called "Gastro-carcinoma" a CANCER.....


So "Division of Labour" is very important for wellbeing of body.... Same applied to a family or to whole human community.... Men r assigned their roles & women r assigned theirs.... Family life would be much better if each member stick to their role...

In some unfavourable circumstances, cells start doing a different job in addition to their assigned job ,,, like cells of tongue normally don't form a scaly layer which cells of skin does,,, but in paan/tobacco eaters tongue cells start to form that scaly layer too... in attempt to counter abbrasive damage by paan...

Similarly, if forced by circumstances, men & women can take up jobs that r NOT usually expected from them,,, Like women can go to earn for family if man is unable to do so for some reason or if she is, say, divorced...

There r examples of such participation by women in Prophet's time... But these mullahs have "Tunnel Vision"...

It should be left up to the woman to decide how she wants to dress. However there are literally countless examples of women wearing modest clothing but kicking butt in professional fields.
