Lawyers distribute beef on Madras High Court campus

A section of lawyers of the Madras High Court, on Friday afternoon, distributed beef dishes on court campus in protest against the recent ban on selling and possession of cow's meat by the Maharashtra government.

Around 1.30 p.m., over 30 lawyers including members of the Progressive Advocates Association of Tamil Nadu gathered near the Aavin booth inside the court complex and spread the beef delicacies on plantain leaves much to the surprise of those gathered there attracted by the noise.

Then they raised slogans against the ruling BJP government in Maharashtra which has imposed a ban on beef throughout the State via the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Bill that was recently approved by President of India.

The advocates distributed the cooked beef among colleagues and to others on the complex and distributed pamphlets with protest messages.

Speaking to media persons gathered there, the protesters rebuked the actions of the Maharashtra government and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the ban on beef. "Beef is the poor man's meat and ban shows that the BJP government doesn't care about the people belonging to the lower strata in the State. More shocking are the words of Hindu Munnani leader Ramagopalan who afterwards made a call to implement a similar ban in our State," said advocate Marx Ravindran of the Progressive Advocates Association who led the agitation.

The group stated that they plan to conduct protests throughout Tamil Nadu if the ban in Maharashtra isn't lifted soon.

Many illegal slaughterhouses operate in large cities such as Chennai and Mumbai. As of 2004, there were 3,600 legal and 30,000 illegal slaughterhouses in India. Efforts to close them down have, so far, been largely unsuccessful. In 2013, Andhra Pradesh estimated that there were 3,100 illegal and 6 licensed slaughterhouses in the State.

India produced 3.643 million metric tons of beef in 2012, of which 1.963 million metric tons was consumed domestically and 1.680 million metric tons was exported. India ranks 5th in the world in beef production, 7th in domestic consumption and 1st in exporting.

However, most of the exported "beef" is water buffalo meat; water buffalo are not usually considered holy in Hinduism.

Besides that, I think I read somewhere that Prophet Muhammed(saw) preferred goat meat over beef, Allahu Alim (God knows best).

actually, i don't think the makkans and the early muslims in the time of hazrat muhammad would have known of beef even... cattle in my knowledge weren't part of that region.

in agriculture, it would have been donkeys i think pulling the plough.

Dadri, Uttar Pradesh: The 50-year-old father of an Indian Air Force personnel was beaten to death by a mob on the outskirts of Delhi on Monday night, allegedly over rumours that he had eaten beef.

Mohammad Ikhlaq and his 22-year-old son were dragged from their house by around 100 villagers in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh and beaten with bricks. Ikhlaq's son is critical.

His older son Mohammad Sartaj, 24, is an engineer with the Air Force.

Half an hour before the attack, an announcement was allegedly made at a temple nearby that a calf had been slaughtered and its carcass had been found near a transformer.

No names were taken in the announcement, but there are only two Muslim families in the area and the other family was out.

At around 10.30 pm, a large mob allegedly descended on Ikhlaq's house, wrecked everything and even attacked his wife and 70-year-old mother.

"My husband's head was smashed in," said Ikhlaq's wife.

The men were still being beaten when the police arrived. Six young men were arrested from the spot. The police say they were all drunk.

Ikhlaq's daughter said they only had mutton in their fridge, a gift from relatives on Eid. The police say they have taken the meat and sent it for forensic testing.

Killing cows is illegal in Uttar Pradesh.

The police are investigating who started the rumours in a part of western Uttar Pradesh that is prone to trouble at the slightest provocation.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said those involved in the killing "would not be spared."

News of the arrests led to tension in the area as villagers clashed with the police, allegedly forcing them to fire in the air. Villagers have claimed that a boy was injured in the firing.

As various accounts swirled on social media, the district administration warned trouble-makers. "If a digital war against communal harmony is initiated then the guilty will be punished. But our first concern is to stop any such thing and we are working on it," said NP Singh, the district magistrate.
