MUMBAI: Mumbai will enter a world class era of commuting with the inauguration of the Mumbai Metro on Sunday, a top official said here on Saturday.

RInfra's Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd CEO Abhay Mishra made the announcement at a media conference here on Saturday morning.

Accordingly, from Sunday the 11.4 km long Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar east-west corridor with 12 stations en route on the elevated line will become operational, proving to be a boon for Mumbaikars, especially with the monsoon around the corner.

A world class era of commuting?

India media seem to have made “world class” a cliche。

Why elevated?Why not underground?

This is phase 1 it does not need to be underground but others will be going forward, the problem with Mumbai is it is a dense city with limited sq feet to implement such projects. Planning permission and residents complaining about noise, dust pollution have not helped also.

.
Sarjenprabhu, the reason for not having an underground line instead of an overhead one, is not because Bangalore's building underground. There is absolutely no connection whatsoever. Anyway, I'd rather we not feed the Chinese troll.

Ye Vasundhara kab chalaegi? :hitwall:

Anyways congrats Mumbai Vaasyion :enjoy::enjoy:

What a fucking shame. Its taken them almost a decade to commission one line of 12 kms.

Meanwhile Delhi adds around 100 kms per decade.
While delhi uses govt land for majority of its construction activity, Metro project in mumbai had the tedious process of buying private land. Mind you Land is very very expensive in those area's.

Most area's are marshy ... Mumbai island was artificially created by joining 7 islands hence going underground in this part isnt viable and would turn out to be too expensive.

Does not explain why it takes 10 years to build 12 kms.

If its expensive, then build less, but build it on time.

Mumbai is ridiculously slow, and the problem is Mumbaikars, they are just too pathetic to demand their rights. It took 18 years for that one Sea Link to come up. It takes 10 years for 12 kms of Metro to come. it takes an equal amount of time to build the freeways there.

Fact of the matter is that other cities are able to get their work done on time. Mumbai can not. If you want there can be a 100 different justifications of why that happens, but it does not cut any ice. The real reason is simply corruption, the politicos take time to divvy up the pie and everyone fights for it.

Being the financial capital of India, it should have infrastructure that matches Delhi, sadly it doesnt even have half of that.

Funding bro ... We never received funding from centre, sealink was planned in early 1990's and Mumbai metro was planned before delhi but we didn't receive any funding.

You see, projects like Metro aren't easy to do, firstly Reliance did lots of rona dhona and demanded re-negotiation of ticketing price which suspended the work. lots of litigation were filed about the close proximity of tracks to households by home buyers ... stalling it further.

Mumbai has a 33km sea link planned to cut distance to goa, it is still awaiting centre's fund.

On the otherhand, Mono-rail handled by L&T was i think the quickest to construct.

You cannot compare to delhi man.. look at the roads, single lanes were left for traffic to move when they were drilling the pillars ... you can imagine the chaos.

.
Mumbai is a very small city in sq feet, we need to build new cities because Mumbai just can't cope with massive population, limited green spaces and the nexus of builders and politics in play it will just get worse in the future.

Take a leaf out of China's book they have made modern cities from scratch!

Is your idiocy the result of genetics or your school system?

This is not a BRTS[Bus Rapid Transit System], what idiots like you call a 'Metro Bus'.

This is a proper Metro. India has been building Metro systems since 1998.

Mitti Paoo, ussay Galti say Mistake ho gaya! :D

are u so intellectually challenged to compare metro bus with a metro train??
