MQM landed in Punjab

MQM in Punjab

There are various reasons why the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s holding of simultaneous rallies in Punjab’s major cities on Sunday is a healthy sign for Pakistani politics.

These rallies are being viewed as an attempt by the urban Sindh-based party to move beyond its comfort zone to make electoral inroads in other provinces, where at present it is largely a political non-entity. This marks a departure from the past and the party’s ‘ethnic’ roots, much more so than when the party changed its nomenclature from ‘Mohajir’ to ‘Muttahida’ in the late 1990s. It is a welcome step towards national cohesion.

What is also welcome is the Punjab government’s tolerance of other political forces. There were fears that the provincial government might try and obstruct the MQM’s efforts to hold rallies in Punjab, but the PML-N-led government showed prudence. There can be little argument with Shahbaz Sharif’s comments that the essence of democracy means that all political parties are free to go anywhere in the country.

However, if the MQM wants to raise its profile beyond urban Sindh it must squarely confront its violence-prone past and reflect on current accusations of the use of strong-arm tactics. While the party has sent members of the middle class to the assemblies, the stigma of the violence attached to it refuses to go away. A recent example is the spurt of killings in Karachi and Hyderabad targeting members of the breakaway Haqiqi faction. Fingers have been pointed towards elements associated with the MQM. The party must ensure it severs ties with those who take the law into their own hands. It should fight its battles solely at the ballot box. One hopes the trend of political parties moving beyond parochial interests and attempting to establish themselves catches on across the country as that is good for Pakistani democracy.

This is what MQMs politics has brought to Karachi

The writing reads 'Karachi is ours not yours - Save Karachi Committee'

I am of the impression that MQM is the true secular party of Pakistan with secular leaders. Good for Pakistan if one more party emerges strongly.
Probably the one party which does not always shout about Kashmir. And consequently will not be able to solve it because the others will cash their 'soft' stance towards India. But their rise in influence will make other parties feel that relations with India need not be shunned. I would like to see MQM in the role of the largest opposition in Pakistan with PPP in power. In that configuration the country will be doing its best and its relations with India will be best IMO.

lol....bro u dont know MQM much, have u ever heard; "Garajnay k badal barastay nahi"

Same is is with rest political parties of pakistan, they only shout abt kashmir, but MQM is the only who knows the solution of kashmir well, thats why the people love MQM, and the previous President was from MQM, and MQM have strong presence in kashmir!

it may have thousands of implications, like ANP or jiye sindh riting it, second possibility maybe, it implies karachi city is over populated and enough is enough let it remain on the hands of karachites, dont settle here to increase the crises of over population.

if the population of karachi keeps increasing like this, karachi as you say will be like a ghetto, a lower life style, due to lack of water and electricity it is hard now to facilitate the present karachites let alone the immigrants.

due to pathan mafia, karachi has already declined as an industrial city, karachi will be like kolkata..

This Dawn editorial is a good one. For MQM to get beyond its past, going national is the only option.

winning seats aint the case buddy... PMLQ won seats in punjab and balouchistan even after giving a green signal to start of operations

even if MQM claims to be a national party they have still been unable to cut those ethnic roots of it!!!

ps: yeah it is kindda funny :)
