IAF Chief has now confirmed that Tejas MK-2 which will begin its development from 2019 onwards will be procured to replace Mirage-2000 and Mig-29 fighter fleet from Indian Air Force as development and production of 5th generation AMCA fighter jet will start only after 2030.

DRDO Chief recently confirmed that IAF already has issued a letter of intent for 201 Tejas MK-2, which over 83 Tejas MK-1A to be ordered soon and 40 Tejas MK-1 which was already ordered earlier.

IAF already has asked for specific changes required for the Tejas MK-2 which will make it slot between Tejas MK-1 and 110 units of fighter jets for which RFI was recently issued by IAF in the Mediumweight category of the fighter class.

IAF is not keen on pursuing co-production deal with Russia for development of the 5th generation Stealth fighter in Heavy Weight category. Which means when Su-30MKI fleet is up for replacement, Heavy Weight fighter class in IAF will sink or completely disappear, largely attributed to reducing higher operational cost.

Tejas MK-1 already inducted in IAF has seen high praise coming from former pilots associated with Mirage-2000 Squadrons, with improved Tejas MK-1A all set for a larger role in IAF, which will be IAFs go to Air Defence fighter aircraft in the region . for Tejas MK-2 , IAF is now even planning bigger role and it is likely to be heavily deployed in the region where its shares border with China to counter fleet of J-10 series in the region
