What's new

Move begins to form new India state

What about such demands for other states?

Isnt it going to create mess for Congress govt ?
Or is it a move to destabalise congress as everyone is voicing for a separate state.

Each state is given resource from central government. When a state is divided, the new states get those resources and their spending will be different compared to former larger state.

Like for example, the most depressed states in India was Bihar , UP and Orrisa. By forming Uttarkhand, they get an ability to uplift their state and now that state is doing much better.

Also, some time back in history, Punjab was split into Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Now if you look at those states, there are among the prosperous states in India.

Having smaller states eases administration issues, concentrates the resources where local communities would prefer.

Otherwise look at the example of largest state in community. The CM there is busy building her statues in almost all the roads out there. What a waste of resource in a poor country like India.

Your understanding makes sense but why there is so much protest then ?

capital of the new proposed state to be culled out of Andhra Pradesh.

"Hyderabad, I think, will always be the capital of Telangana," Pillai, who is here on an overnight visit to the state, told reporters after a security review meeting.

The remarks of Pillai assume significance as the political backlash in Andhra Pradesh mounted with more MLAs resigning to protest the Centre's agreeing to the carving out of a separate Telangana state.

Pillai also said the agitation against Telangana would die down in the coming days once the people understand the real implication of what is meant.

"I'm sure that in the coming days, as people understand the real implication of what is meant, I think the agitation would die down and the process for formation of the new state would continue," he said.

Earlier, Pillai reviewed the security situation in the state.

Asked about the fate of the dialogue with separatists in the wake of an attack on senior Hurriyat leader Fazal Haq Quereshi, Pillai said "the dialogue must continue. I think everybody agrees that we can resolve problems only through dialogue and understanding of everybody's position."

He said Union home minister P Chidambaram has stated that he is willing to talk to everybody and that dialogue will continue.

GJM launches fast-unto-death in Darjeeling for Gorkhaland
PTI 11 December 2009, 02:12pm IST
SILIGURI (WB): Emboldened by the Centre's move to initiate process for carving Telangana state out of Andhra Pradesh, members of the Gorkha

Janmukti Morcha today began fast-unto-death at five places in Darjeeling hills and Dooars demanding Gorkhaland state.

GJM press and publicity secretary Benoy Tamang said the agitation started in front of district magistrate's office in Darjeeling as also in Kurseong, Kalimpong and Kalchini in Dooars from 10 am. A batch of 21 members each began the fast.

The GJM also called a 96-hour general strike in the hills and Dooars from December 14. At least 150 members of the Nari Mukti Morcha, the women's wing of the GJM would sit for an indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi on December 13.

The employees of Gorkha Bhawan in Kolkata were also asked to sit on a hunger strike soon, Tamang said.

He said GJM's immediate demand was that a Gorkhaland bill be simultaneously raised with the Telengana statehood bill in Parliament.

A four-member GJM delegation, led by its general secretary, Roshan Giri, went to Delhi yesterday to convince the central leadership and the opposition parties of the merit of their demand, he said.

Asked about the forthcoming fourth round of tripartite talks scheduled for December 21, Tamang said the hill people were eagerly waiting for the talks.

Rajiv why are you giving examples of success stories look at jarkhand and chattisgarh did they prosper, leave apart the scams like what madhu koda had done.
Telangana is not a resource rich region it has poor soil soil for crops and it resides on deccan plateau wihch is above 500 m from sea level.
The coal reserves in singareni are of low quality. It cannot self sustain if it is a separate state is formed like Haryana or uttaranchal.
In order to develop that region. There are some irrigation projects which are going on in Andhra on the name of Jalayagnam. Lot of the funds are invested in telangana than rayalaseema and andhra for the benifit of it. In addition to that Hyderabad is the capital city which again in telangana region.
The only reason TRS wants a separate state is because of political power and to implement their own agenda.
There are people in telangana who oppose the state division and wants their needs to be addressed.
Andhra pradesh is quickly becoming a well developed state in India and why should there be a division?
If we stay united we can address our problems in the centre as we have 42 representatives to lok sabha. Division is an Unwise decision made haste and in panic.

Yes you are right. Because of backwardness there is a chance of maoist take over.

Your understanding makes sense but why there is so much protest then ?

First the people who wanted a new state protested. So, after threatening to continue fasting until death, the govt. approved their requests. Now the people who are opposed to the partition of state is fighting. Who says democracy is easy?

Though every state that has split cant claim success, there are hopes that a change might benefit the people.

I heard that Warangal district in Telagana has lot of problems with farming. But unfortunately for India, those farmers would hardly learn and migrate to cities to find a job.

Hyderabad is becoming a top notch city, and not the entire state of AP. The northern parts of state have problems with Maoists and poor farmers are caught in the endless cycle of paying higher interest for farming.

Now a divided state might reduce the money what Telagana will have, but it also gives more say to people who are planning to find some other solutions.

India can be IT superpower and Hyderabad might have big share of profits from it but all these benefit only small sections of society . What we lack is industrialization? India can use China as a guide for creating SEZ's. India has approved some SEZ's in 2006, but I am unaware of any SEZ up and working.

Telagana might have a chance of getting new leaders that would be interested in building the state rather than building the IT infrastructure. It has lot to learn from Chennai, which is soon becoming Detroit of India, which will provide lot of average income to lot of people than to focus on high pay for the few.

Look at Kerala - 100% educated state in the country, Look at Haryana - its higher education level, look at Punjab, Look at HP, Look at Uttarkhand, it seems more hopeful. Now regarding Chattisgarh and Jharkhand, give it some time, you would see more improvement! Already these state realize that they are behind and realization is the first step to getting to solve the issue.

To tell you telangana is situated in deccan plateau and the lands you find there are not that much supportive to farming and the rivers flowing through the region need some irrigation projects to benefit the region, which the AP govt. has initiated under Jalayagnam which needs massive funds and large portion is going to that region, all this is possible if there is united Andhra where we have 42 MP's

Even Telangana state forms the political leaders remain the same. If any representative wants to develop the region he can fight for it as we are in India and it is democracy. Rather than fighting to divide it which has no sense.

Small states are developed doesn't mean large state cannot develop. Andhra is one of the fast developing states in India.
