Power Tunnel & Waterway Overview – Mohmand Dam Project

The Power Tunnel & Waterway of the 800 MW Mohmand Dam is a crucial component of the project, designed to efficiently channel water from the reservoir to the powerhouse. It features a combination of concrete-lined and steel-lined sections to ensure structural integrity and optimize water flow.

This tunnel, having a diameter of 13.2 m conveys water to the powerhouse through a set of manifolds/penstocks which will house 4 generating units..

Key Specifications:

Diameter: 13.2 meters
Total Length: 730 meters
Concrete-Lined Section: 381 meters
The first 126 meters has a gradient of 6.65%.
The remaining 255 meters is inclined at a steeper 10.6% slope.
Steel-Lined Section: 349 meters

Under normal reservoir operation, The power intake will remain under submerged conditions thus ensuring efficient water flow into the waterway untill powerhouse. This innovative design enhances the operational efficiency of the powerhouse and underscores the advanced engineering efforts at Mohmand Dam.

Chairman WAPDA visits Mohmand Dam:
Chairman reviews construction activities at key sites

Chairman directs Project Management for timely completion of the Project
January 06, 2025: Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) visited Mohmand Dam, a multipurpose project being constructed across River Swat in Mohmand District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and reviewed the ongoing construction activities carried out at the key sites of the project.

During his visit, Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) was briefed about the construction in progress at different sites of Mohmand Dam Project that include Diversion Tunnels Outlet Works and Downstream Coffer Dam, Powerhouse Excavation and Shaft Access Tunnel, Spillway Concrete Works, Main Dam, Pit and Plinth Excavation/Concrete Works, Downstream Coffer Dam and Diversion Tunnels Inlet Structure, Power Intake on-going works.

Chairman WAPDA was accompanied by the General Manager/Project Director Mohmand Dam Project with his team and representatives of the Consultants and Contractors during his visit.

The Chairman also presided over a progress review meeting to meet the timelines in accordance with schedule for completion of the project at the project office with WAPDA team, the Consultants and the Contractors.

The matters related to construction in progress on Upstream and Downstream Coffer Dams, Dam Plinth, Foot Print and Pit Excavation Powerhouse, Power Intake/Tunnel Quarry Development and Large Scale Triaxial Results and Spillway Concreting were discussed in detail to achieve the target of timely completion scheduled in 2026-27.

It is important to note that WAPDA is constructing Mohmand Dam Project across River Swat in Mohmand District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is the 5th highest concrete-face-rock-fill dam (CFRD) in the world and first highest CFRD in Pakistan.

Mohmand Dam will store water for agriculture, control floods, supply water to Peshawar for urban use and generate green, clean and economically affordable hydel electricity. On completion, Mohmand Dam will store 1.29 MAF of water to irrigate 18,237 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda and supplement irrigation supplies to 160,000 acres of existing land.

The project has an installed power capacity of 800 MW with annual energy generation of 2.86 billion units of electricity. It will also provide 300 million gallons water per day to Peshawar for drinking purpose. Annual benefits of the project are estimated at Rs. 51.6 billion.

Construction Continues on All Key Sites

Mohmand Dam is scheduled for Completion in 2026-27

February 24, 2025: Following diversion of River Swat in August last year, the construction work on all key sites of Mohmand Dam is progressing ahead at a good pace; while the Project is expected to be completed in 2026-27.

Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) visited Mohmand Dam Project and reviewed in detail the construction activities on Spillway, Upstream and Downstream Coffer Dams, Diversion Tunnels, Power House and Power Intake.

GM/PD along with the Consultants and the Contractors briefed the Chairman about the targets and the achievements on different work fronts of the Project.

It was briefed that concreting on the Spillway is progressing ahead of schedule. Downstream Coffer Dam has reached the design height, while Upstream Coffer Dam will attain its maximum elevation of 414 meter above mean sea level in April this year.

Excavation for construction of the Main Dam pit and side slopes stripping is also in progress.

Excavation works for construction of the Power Tunnel, Penstocks and Manifold/Shaft Access Tunnels are also underway. Likewise, excavation for the Irrigation Tunnels and rock support works are also going on; while construction work on the left side Main Canal is also continuing.

Later, the Chairman also presided over a progress review meeting at the Project Office. Detailed deliberations were made during the meeting on various issues including quarry development, large scale triaxial machine testing, electrical and mechanical (E&M) design and manufacturing etc.

Addressing the meeting, the Chairman underlined the significance of quarry development for construction of the Main Dam.

He urged upon the Contractors to review the plan and deploy additional resources for much needed quarry development.

He also directed the Project Management, the Consultants and the Contractors to adhere to the timelines for completion of the Project without compromising on the quality standard of works.

It is important to note that WAPDA is constructing Mohmand Dam Project across River Swat in Mohmand District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is the 5th highest concrete-face-rock-fill dam in the world.

With a gross water storage capacity of 1.29 MAF, Mohmand Dam will irrigate 18,233 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda, besides supplementing irrigation supplies to 160,000 acres of existing land.

Installed power capacity of the Project stands at 800 MW with annual energy generation of 2.86 billion units.

The Project will also provide 300 million gallons water per day to Peshawar for drinking purpose.
