Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party came under fire on Saturday for demanding cuts to an Indian film, claiming it showcased "anti-Modi hatred".

A scene in the Tamil-language film "Mersal" shows a character delivering a fiery monologue in which he attacks the government's failure to provide free public healthcare despite charging a national goods and services tax (GST) of up to 28 percent.

"People are paying seven percent GST in Singapore and receiving free medical care. The Indian government is taking 28 percent GST from people. Why can't the government provide free medical care?," says the character, played by south Indian star Vijay, who goes by one name.

The scene sparked an uproar among members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who have called for it to be deleted from the film.

H. Raja, the BJP's national secretary, said the film showcased "Vijay's anti-Modi hatred" as he countered the claims made in the movie.

"It's a lie that medical treatment is free in Singapore," he tweeted Friday.

The BJP's demands for a cut to the film incited anger on social media, where hashtags #Mersal and #MersalvsModi were trending Saturday after many users accused the party of curbing freedom of expression.

Political rivals also attacked the Hindu nationalist party's censorious demands.

"Mr. Modi, cinema is a deep expression of Tamil culture and language. Don't try to demon-etise Tamil pride by interfering in Mersal," Rahul Gandhi, vice president of the opposition Congress party, tweeted Saturday referring to the government's controversial cash ban, the so-called demonetisation, imposed last year.

The GST, which came into effect on July 1, was designed to replace a web of state and national levies and transform India's $2 trillion economy into a single market for the first time.

But critics have said the tax's complex structure -- four main rates ranging from five to 28 percent -- has confused businesses, hurt sales and pulled the brakes on the growth of Asia's third-largest economy.

"Mersal" released on Wednesday to record earnings and has been running to packed theatres.

Well this sound familiar...I mean it seems to be the same story on this side of the border as well. Though I think the people get free health care but the quality seems to be really poor and everyone who can afford goes for private healthcare.

Gst should only be implemented if the majority of your populace is able to absorb the extra cost.

Singaporean obviously have no issue, malaysians gets 6% gst on everything and complains of increasing living costs while wages remains relatively stagnant.

Fight outside ‘Mersal’ in B’luru: Pro-Kannada outfit calls for ban on Tamil movies

The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike landed up at the theatre and began protesting the attack on Kannada speakers.

“We had a lengthy discussion with the theatre owner. We refused to budge and demanded that the screening be stopped. At around 4 pm, the theatre owner agreed to stop screening the film. All the people in the theatre were asked to leave,” Shetty said.

The Vedike is now planning to launch a state-wide protest, demanding a ban on screening of Tamil films in the state.

“It was not just one theatre in Bengaluru where the screening was stopped. The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike workers staged protests across the state and the screening of the film was stopped in several theatres in Karnataka. We are planning to discuss this issue with other pro-Kannada organisations and launch a state-wide protest, calling for the ban on Tamil films,” he said.

It’s Mersal time in Tamil Nadu & fans are ignoring the BJP

The BJP is trying hard to make inroads in Tamil Nadu. This is the land where the magic of movies, the fandom of superstars, and the political charisma of politicians coalesce into an inimitable mix.

The BJP, seen as a North Indian party with a swaggering saffron profile, has only shown by its inane objection to Mersal that the south, Tamil Nadu especially, is not an easy monolith to conquer, by either threat and bluster. Its own cultural heroes and brand of politics that are not immune to street fights and personality cults know only too well the art of political muscle flexing.

BJP leaders may object, but Mersal is right now getting a lot of publicity that shows its makers and hero in a righteous light in public. It has taken over prime time on regional TV shows right from the morning, where frames from the film rather than the BJP’s tirade, is being aired. Trade pundits say they are counting their monies saying the movie is the second highest grossing film of the year so far.

No Search Operation Was Conducted At Vishal's House, Says Directorate General Of Goods And Service Tax Intelligence

GSTI Officials Had Inspected TDS and Excise Records At The Actor's Production House In The Afternoon
OUTLOOK WEB BUREAU

Directorate General of Goods and Service Tax Intelligence (DGGSTI) on Monday denied that it raided the premises of top Tamil actor Vishal's film production house.

Initially, officers of the GST Intelligence Agency inpsected the actor's house in the afternoon to check his TDS and excise records since Vishal is a film producer and distributor.

However, later in the evening GSTI denied there were any raids or searches.

The officials' visit came after Vishal, who also heads the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and is the general secretary of the South Indian Artistes' Association (SIAA), locked horns with BJP leader H Raja who had publicly admitted that he watched Vijay-starrer Mersal online and wanted scenes criticising GST removed.

Vishal had accused Raja of "promoting piracy" by watching Mersal online.

"Be A Hitler And Build This Country," Asgiriya Anunayaka Thero Tells Gotabaya

Hitler represents the essence of unprecedented evil. ‘Hitler’ invented the mechanics of tyrannical rule that obliterated all traditional elements of political and spiritual values known to mankind. The advice to be like Hitler is therefore, a matter on which even ‘Devadatta’ would have second thoughts
