I agree with @FaujHistorian historian who is essentially saying the same thing I said with maybe his own personal twist (high caste low caste etc.)
I am afraid the problem is not between Hindus and Muslims per se though.
Cause the same Muslims lived perfectly okay with the same Hindus for many thousands of years on the same land as the same people.
Before they became Muslims.
On the shopkeeper thing, its got nothing to do with caste, but with habits and culture and perceptions. That stem from a foreign faith and culture that is at odds with the ancestral faith and culture.
Hindu households may have Muslim ayahs and bais, but never cooks. Same reason.
