German tourist's rape: Two youths identified - dnaindia.com

CHANDIGARH: The police on Monday identified two youths from Ambala in Haryana, who could be involved in the alleged abduction and rape of a German tourist here.

Refusing to name the two youths, ASP Madhur Verma said, the car used by them to dump the girl was recovered in Ambala. He said police teams had been rushed there to nab the youths.

A case of attempt to rape, abduction and molestation has been registered against six youths in connection with the incident. The CFSL would submit its report within the next three to four days and it will be a "conclusive evidence" against the culprits, he said. The police have also intimated the German Embassy in New Delhi about the incident.

Six youths had allegedly abducted and raped the German tourist from the parking lot of a hotel in Chandigarh's Sector 17, early on Sunday, just a day after the Union Territory administration launched the tourism police.

The victim had bite marks on her body. In her complaint to the police she alleged that the youths had beaten her up. Her clothes were also torn. Her medical examination on Monday confirmed that she had been raped, the police said.

Earlier, the police had said she was giving conflicting statements leaving them clueless. They admitted, however, that the bruises on her body indicated it was more than just a molestation bid.

The victim told the police that she had gone to the hotel for a party on Saturday night and had some drinks there. Around 2.20 am, she stepped out for a smoke. She found a group of youths standing by a Scorpio. She got into a conversation with them and agreed to take a ride with them. But she was allegedly whisked away before she could raise an alarm.

According to another version, however, she had come out of the hotel for a smoke and saw some youths standing near a Scorpio. She was in an inebriated state and told them that they had parked the vehicle wrongly. One of the youths then told her to park it the right way. She got into the vehicle and drove out of the parking lot towards Matka Chowk, from where the youths took the vehicle, taking her along with them. Ten hours later she was dumped in Sector 20.

She later told the police that the youths kept driving for some hours before taking her to a room, where they tried to rape her. When she resisted their attempts, one of the youths thrashed her and tore her clothes.

Around 9 am, they took her out of the room and again drove for about four hours before transferring her to a white Maruti car in which two persons were sitting. The duo dumped her in Sector 20.

A police officer said she had given the registration numbers of the vehicles, but one of which was found to be fake.

The German said she had come to the city on September 23 to attend the wedding of some Indian friends.

The police swung into action in the morning. Police teams were dispatched to raid resorts, hotels and guesthouses in Zirakpur, Panchkula and nearby places. Chandigarh SSP S Srivastava had said the accused had been identified as residents of Ropar and raids were being conducted to nab them.

Rape anger overshadows 'Incredible India' at London trade meet

Sex attacks on foreign tourists are not being taken seriously by the Indian government, according to a British woman whose rapist was released on bail after serving three months of a 21-year jail sentence.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, spoke out as Sujit Banerjee, India's secretary for culture and tourism, visited London on a trip to promote 'Incredible India' at the World Trade Market.

She was brutally assaulted on Christmas Eve last year, suffering bleeding and convulsions for days afterwards and was forced to remain in India for four months while her attacker Parbat Singh went on trial.

The case gained publicity in the wake of the rape and murder of teenager Scarlett Keeling, who was killed in Goa in February.
Singh was granted bail in July and the woman said government prosecutors failed to attend a Supreme Court hearing in the case yesterday.

Branding Delhi the 'rape capital of the world', she said: "They are clearly not taking it seriously. If the government fails to turn up at the Supreme Court, that's not taking it seriously, that's the complete opposite. I'm not talking about just me, they need to take the level of sexual crime against women in India very seriously."

Last year, more than five million tourists visited India, with the most coming from America and the UK. Government statistics earlier this year suggested rape is the fastest growing crime in the country.

When asked if any action would be taken about Singh's case, Mr Banerjee said: "The Indian government is fully aware of all these incidents that happen, but nevertheless they are very strange incidents which occur.

"The law has to take its own course, but the Indian government is fully conscious of its duties and responsibilities in this regard and these cases are taken very seriously. But you know and we know that the law has to take its own course and that will be done."

The woman said reasons were not given for granting Singh bail and there was no hearing offering the chance to oppose the move, contrary to the correct process in Indian courts.

The case will come before a registrar at the Supreme Court on 3 December, after which there will be a further hearing to decide whether he should be on bail.

I expected better quality from some of the posters (from both sides). Surely insults are not needed. Some (not all) of the tourists are just spoiled in my opinion. Also they think only about party, party, party. What is the point of going to a foreign country if you just want to find places to party?
