What's new

Military operation with Iran against PKK in Kandil region is on agenda: Erdoğan

Ignoring Erdogan's mistakes, i know that Turks are wise people.
We will never forget this man's neutral position and his tries to mediate and end the war

Buddy, without Baghdad's approval we would do nothing. Have no doubt about that
Respect for Iraq's sovereignty is a must

There is no Iraq government right now, isis and kurds doing as they please.

For it to be a functioning government they must be able to control their own land.

What did that Turkish general do, you mean gulf war?
Tell me more I really don't know.

During Saddam-Iran war and he was a president.
Ahmet Kenan Evren was a Turkish military officer who was the seventh President of Turkey from 1980 to 1989. He refuted to help Saddam and attack Iran and i am thankful to that guy. However he conducted a coup against Fehri Koruturk's government so i am not sure about Turkish people's view about him.

They will have a problem with a massive invasion, whilst they are not able to act in the KRG controlled north the US will seize the opportunity to label Iran as invading another state which would be followed by who knows what.

Many here underestimate the importance of having central gov approval for operations due to their limited ability of countering it, without central gov approval you're also very limited in what you can do given that Baghdad and Arbil as well have a certain level of influence due to ties with global powers. The policy of the past decade with regards to the Kurdish issue has been that of bypassing central governments and look at the results? The US doesn't take a tough stance on Turkey due to their NATO alliance, not the same story with Iran.

Nevertheless even if approved such an operation would be ineffective. Have you noticed how the bombings in Baghdad have been reduced massively, this is due to IS being denied safe ground to operate/base itself in the nearby region. The operational/base for PKK is the KRG, which you not only leave untouched you deal with it friendly, it's not like the Turkish gov does not know that they know very well far more than any of us know, but money can be more important.

It is not the money but banana central goverment, do you know how many time Turkey have warned that banana goverment of yours about pkk. When we make operations on your soil yet you are the one who are protesting. When we wanted to fight against deash and pkk your government was protesting and now with iran your willing to allow against only deash:-). Contradicitons you are talking about.

If finding a governance body of that specific territory is the biggest concern of yours then that would be the KRG, yet you don't address to them that the PKK is your issue, neither do they act to remove that issue rather they(Barzani) state they do not view the PKK as a terrorist organisation.

Turkish gov didn't have serious plans to fight IS in Iraqi territory, they were too busy aiding the Nujaifi plan of Hashd al Watani whom turned out to be useless. That was followed by threats about Tal Afar, if this town was of such concern they would've acted in 2014 before it fell to IS yet there was complete silence. Turkey's foreign policy with regards to Iraq has been hostile to Baghdad for years. Either way you will probably not understand half of what I said, not the first time either.

You don't recognize that your foreign policy is a disaster? The PKK/YPG is experiencing a golden age thanks to AKP's genius foreign policy. Yet you try to keep up the hostile stance to Baghdad, it does not matter that much to Iraq anymore as it did in 2015 given that they've re-established control over northern territories to expand further in the future. Right now this policy (even solely in the Iraqi space) is biting you as well as you can see with Barzani starting to show his hostility towards you and open friendliness to the PKK. Continue this policy? And no you can't use military might in the country en masse against Baghdad's wishes, it doesn't work that way. That's Saddam style behavior which has bad results in the long tern.

We'll likely see AKP come to acceptance with SAA/Assad rule in Syria, the best outcome is their expansion and takeover of other terrorist area's (I'm sure Iraq can provide help through the PMU in the near future). That leaves the Kurdish problem which could be solved through friendly ties with Baghdad and Damascus rather than working with Kurdish nationalists. Unless you want to see the PKK growing.

Turks don't like to accept your words; mostly b/c they Underestimate Iraq's power.
you are right about Turkey's solution toward their PKK problem. Turks can solve PKK problem with making triangle alliance among Ankara-Baghdad-Damascus against PKK and YPJ but they won't do this and will come toward Iran to make for them bridge to Baghdad and Damascus:-).
Iran for many reason won't help Turks against PKK and most of these news are bullshit.
As Iranian I personally won't support any fight against secular Kurds (that does not mean my support for Iraq division but I think Irbil-Baghdad tension should solve peacefully and in case of war Iran should stay neutral).
unlike that I support war with Wahabbis and Takfiris in any place of world.

For the most part I agree with you (first time) we all say Turkey's foreign policy is and was disaster under the short man with glasses it was literally a joke.

Although Turkey can not anymore come to a resolution with Syria. It is to late also you forget Syria (Assad gov) and Iraq to some degree have been the biggest supporters of PKK. Iraqis have given up on there northern borders a long time ago. The PKK is not there problem and they would probably let the Kurdish independence go forward, they don't have much choice.

I think our best option right now would be to arm or support pro Turkey groups in Syria and Iraq just outside of our border 10/30km nothing unrealistic like taking over Damascus or Baghdad, basically create a buffer zone or pockets of influence. At least this would limit any Kurdish / PKK plans in the region for a "greater" Kurdistan. And give Turkey a stronger say on the table. By pro Turkey I mean Turkmens and Arabs who lean towards Turkey. Not salafists who change sides depending on who's got a deeper pocket.

If Ankara does show some military posturing Syria and Iraq can be silenced, however there are too many major players, US, Russia, Iran etc no doubt Iran gained the most out of this conflict mainly through non state actors, which Turkey failed to do. Let's see what happens next in Syria, if Turkey does any more ops etc

@TheCamelGuy btw do you see a military conflict between KRG and Iraq in the future?

Everything you suggested was attempted in the past few years, the possibility was larger when the ISF was nowhere to be seen in the north, it's too late now for any buffer zone or ES type of operation in Iraq, won't happen.

There might be a conflict, it is possible. New developments on this front will be seen after some major events such as finishing up the war on IS, the ties with other regional states, next year's parliamentary election, the new arms that are being acquired strenghtening the military etc. There are many who call for an aggressive policy towards KRG unlike what Abadi is doing, hopefully they get more power in next years elections
