ISLAMABAD: The 2nd Benazir Bhutto International Boxing Championship, to be staged in Islamabad from Dec 20, is likely to host a number of legendary figures including former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, 45, and current boxing sensation Amir Khan who will inaugurate the high-profile tournament.

In a press conference organsied by the Pakistan Boxing Federation on Monday, the PBF president Doda Khan Bhutto told the media about the lavish plans in the offing for the event.

“Famous boxer Amir Khan has already confirmed his participation in the event on our request while former boxing great Mike Tyson has asked us to provide the dates for the event. The former world champion is quite likely to attend the 10-day event,” he said.

Doda further disclosed that 23 countries have already confirmed their participation while the total number of participating countries will be 25.

Pakistan Army alongwith Islamabad Police will be asked to provide top level security to the teams in the major boxing extravaganza, he said, “Discussions are underway with the Army and Islamabad Police for provision of foolproof security in the event.”

None of the foreign teams have visited Pakistan since that ghastly terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore during March 2008, expressing security fears about playing in the region.

Doda, however, maintained that they have successfully managed to convince the international teams to compete in the Benazir Bhutto International Boxing Championship which will do a lot of good to Pakistan’s image and will boost the economic activity as well.

Elaborating on Pakistan Boxing Federation’s plans for the event, Doda said: “We will introduce three teams in different categories during the event which will cost the federation around Rs60 million.”

He said that they would try to generate money through sponsors which would ensure that financial constraints do not hamper successful staging of the event. However, he said there has been no offer of assistance from the Pakistan Cricket Board yet.

According to one federation official, the opening ceremony would be a paid event while there will be free entry for boxing fans during the ten days of the championship. The event will be held at the Liaquat Gymnasium.

23 countries to contest in BB Int’l boxing

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) Monday confirmed the participation of 23 countries in the Second Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Boxing Tournament which will be held from December 20-30 here at the Liaquat Gymnasium, Pakistan Sports Complex.
Addressing a press conference PBF president Doda Khan Bhutto said that federation was expecting the confirmation from 15 to 20 more countries by the start of the next month.
Doda said that the federation was trying to invite former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson to inaugurate the event and talks were in final stages in this regard. He said that British boxing champion of Pakistan origin Amir Khan has already confirmed his participation as special guest while Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani will also grace the opening ceremony of the event.
He further said that a joint camp of almost all the leading Asian countries boxers will start from December 1 at Liaquat Gymnasium. He said that three teams from Pakistan would participate in the event and the 30 probables for the two teams had already been announced while the squad for the third team was yet to be finalised. He said that a three member selection committee including chairman Group Captain Farooq and members Lt Col Nasir Tung and Mehmood Yousuf Butt would finalise the Pakistan squads while the chief coaching responsibility was given to Zaigham Masil.
Doda hoped that next year the PBF would be successful in luring more than 100 countries for the third Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Boxing Championship as the deal in this regard was near completion.
The PBF president said that around Rs 50-60 million would be spent on the event and the federation had generated all the funds without the help of sponsors to hold that event in a befitting manner. “We don't want money or anything else from the sponsors or others we just want all the stakeholders to come and made this mega event a huge success,” Doda said.
He said that they had chalked out a complete security plan and police and army’s help had been sought for this purpose. “This event is also a test case as there are a lot of security fears in the international teams and by holding the event in safe and sound way we can prove the critics wrong and this will be first step towards the resumption of international sports in Pakistan.”

Pakistan has hosted some international events in the past few years, but this is undoubtedly the most high profile one.

how stupid to name a boxing event after BB

next maybe govt. will change name of Serena Hotel, PC, and change name of all big cities to BB also

but what will they do in the tournament?

Anyways the tourney would be conducted safely and Rehman Malik would be able to provide security to the foreign players this time. Good for Pakistan. And facepalm for the name of the tournament.

Are you really surprised.?

Benazirabad, Zulfiqarabad, Benazir Bhutto International Airport, Benazir Bhutto road, Benazir Bhutto Hospital, in the meeting of the federal cabinet, the portrait of Quaid-e-Azam is dwarfed by the portraits of ZAB and Zardari, and of course BB, the photo of BB and ZAB is hung at PM house President house etc. Do I need to go on?

This country is being held hostage to the name Bhutto, not by a Bhutto.

BTW, the visit of Mike Tyson is good for the publicity of Pakistan in a better image. Good security cover, means other people might be easy to come and play here.

Hide your kids and women. A r@pist is in the town.

This comment is a bit unfair.

Yes, he was jailed for rape but you have to really know his life story to find out what happened with him in the life before that event took place. He had very disturbed and difficult childhood and upbringing. He had no one in his life that could comfort him or he could trust. He finally developed a father son like relationship with his boxing mentor but the guy died. Mike Tyson was very very mentally upset after his death and lost a fight (probably in Japan) which was unthinkable at that time. This was the background when the rape happened.

Before anyone starts jumping up and down, I am not justifying rape.

He could have been the biggest star after Ali but did not have a stable character or life.

he's been largely out of trouble since he embraced Islam......just dont make the mistake of stealing his tiger, and everything would be fine

Boxing: Mohammad Ali declines invitation

KARACHI: The Pakistan Boxing Federation suffered a huge setback in their preparation for the 2nd Benazir Bhutto International Boxing Championship when boxing legend Mohammad Ali turned down an invitation to attend the event due to health issues.
While British boxer Amir Khan has confirmed his presence – and an invitation extended to Mike Tyson – the PBF, hoping to make the event a roaring success, were left saddened by Ali’s regret.
“We contacted him but he turned it down citing health issues,” PBF Secretary Akram Khan told The Express Tribune. “He was very polite with his response and recalled his last visit to the country.”
Teams expected shortly
The event will witness the presence of over 50 boxers from seven countries, according to Akram, and while a British boxer Haider Ali has already joined a group of 34 local boxers in Islamabad, teams from Ghana, Cameroon, Iran, Sri Lanka, Syria and Nepal are expected to arrive shortly.
The PBF, with assistance from the Army Sports Board, will also install an extra ring at the Liaquat Gymnasium where the event will be taking place.
“Training with foreign boxers will give our pugilists good preparation and that’s why we have scheduled a training camp. This will also be cheaper than sending our boxers abroad for training.”
Waseem-Haroon conflict to be resolved
Pakistan will be going in with three teams in the event starting from December 20 with Akram confirming that the pending weight conflict between Mohammad Waseem and Haroon Khan will also be taken care of.
“They will be taking part and the coaches will ***** their performance. Only the best will represent Pakistan in the Asian Championship next year.”

conrats Pakistan to host such a high profile international sporting event. I pray that no miscrients create unrest in this event.

Congratulation to Pakistan fro hosting Ghana, Cameroon, Iran, Sri Lanka, Syria and Nepal. Why china is missing ?

too bad Mike Tyson cant make it

dont worry about miscreants......taleban probably view Amir Khan as a true Muslim mujahideen anyways --i wish i had more fingers to be able to count the number of kaffirs he gave a fat lip

and besides, even a brainwashed suicide bomber would be scared to explode himself near these people --in fear that the detonation chord is faulty design and the real suicide would be an ''assisted'' one
