Russia signs $1.5-bln fighter jet contract with India

Russia and India have signed a $1.5-billion contract on the supplies of 29 more MiG-29K carrier-based fighter jets to New Delhi, the head of the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG said on Friday.

"An agreement on supplying an additional set of MiG-29K fighter jets has been signed, the start of supplies is scheduled for 2012," Mikhail Pogosyan said.

The deal was signed during Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's visit to New Delhi.

Pogosyan said Russia should fulfill the previous contract on supplies of single-seat MiG-29K fighters to India by 2010.

Russia and India signed a contract stipulating the supply of 12 single-seat MiG-29Ks and four two-seat MiG-29KUBs to India in January 2004. The contract is part of a $1.5 billion deal to deliver the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, currently being retrofitted in Russia for the Indian navy.

India's first MiG-29Ks and MiG-29KUBs officially entered service earlier this year.

Analysts believe that India will remain the main purchaser of Russian-made combat aircraft for the next 15 years under existing and future contracts, as the country desperately needs to upgrade its fighter fleet, which includes Su-30MKI and MiG-29 fighters, but mainly consists of obsolete Soviet MiG-21 models.

NEW DELHI, March 12 (RIA Novosti)

Isn't it the old news that india is buying 30 MiG-29ks from russia for its indegenious carrier. and may be another 30 MIg-29Ks for the second carrier instead of LCA, if it fails to fly from carriers. And more over they might buy it for the third one.

This is old news and has already been discussed on PDF on seperate thread.

By the way mig 29k are beautiful fighters.

No these are new versions of mig29 they are much more advanced than IAF's mig 29. They are true muli role with much higher range, more weapon load and very similar to mig 35 (excluding AESA radar and thrust vectoring). In ability, technology and lethality they are as good as F-16 Block 52.

Also Indian Navy has raised RFP for 39 more advanced Jets and the contenders includes, Super hornet, Sea Gripen, Typhoon, Rafale and F-35. So there is no need to worry about the future.

well gripen is the new option they have shown intrest in IAC-1 with their new carrier version in development

as you said mig29 are good i accept but we need best

we need the best of best plains for our AC

the option we just f35, raffale,mig35

F-35 for navy will be a nightmare to maintain..RAFALE is good but not suited for VIK or, IAC-1....and MIG-29K is still the best Navy fighter plane in the region..plus dont forget the Flankers operating from ANDAMAN will also add teeth to NAVY..

well sorry but you statement is showing one word

adjustment

we have to pick the best for our AC

Rafael is top choice but i don't know why we are adding more and more mig 29 while we can choose Rafael mig35 f35 option are there

ADJUSTMENT..i certainly do not want my navy to have a third grade plane.

.what i meant was that for first two carriers the best viable option is Mig-29K..because RAFALE is not suited for STOBAR operations...

This is not as simple as buying a new car or even a new jet, Of starters out of the handful of Naval planes in the world , Only Russian Aircraft like the Mig-29 and other very light aircraft can work with STOBAR configuration on our future carriers.

Tejas , May be the SAAB Gripen(but Sea Gripen is still conceptual) . are the only other aircraft that can work on our carrier Vik and IAC1.

We have to invest significant money in the billions to set up service centres and research development to try and get any other plane to be compatible.

IAF Mig-29 , already has production line in India and service centres also exist. This makes it a perfect fit for IN , it was also already developed and ready.

This is how navy air craft are , Look at the kind of Aircraft US has.
F-18's to this day.

Agreed, but your criteria of best is very different from what the navy see.

Navy is looking at need , capability and cost , They don't get extra point for doing more then you need to.

Rafael is top choice but i don't know why we are adding more and more mig 29 while we can choose Rafael mig35 f35 option are there

Those options are not there , Rafale works of CATOBAR carrier which we don't have yet , IAC2 will be CATOBAR configuration.

IN has issues a new N-MRCA RFI in preparation for that , but most likely they will make their decision based on IAF MRCA , for same benefits they get now by having the Mig-29 .

F-35 is also not available any time soon , and it will come with a pile of US restrictions and NO Indian service centre , IN won't accept that.

They have expressed interest in N-FGFA and Sukhoi and HAL have expressed interest in meeting that need.

Avoid Rafael lol MiG-29s are awesome fighters.

That's not correct, IN evaluated F18SH and Rafale for Gorshkov, but Russia decided to combine the deal only with Mig 29Ks, that's why we had no option for that carrier. This additional order is because N-LCA is still nowhere near (imo also not capable enough) and for reduced cost through commonality, not because there wasn't other options.
Boeing even stated that F18SH could be used with STOBAR too, but had some doubts about it on Gorshkov (maybe too heavy and too less space to take off) and I am more than sure that Rafale could be used from Gorshkov, or Vikrant too, because all that is needed to take off via ski-jump is a good t/w ratio!
The only difference between STOBAR, or CATOBAR carriers is the way the fighters take off, that means the only difference between fighters on these carriers is, the front gear! Be it Rafale M, or Mig 29K, both have strengthend front gear, but mainly for the arrested landing, the difference is only, that the Rafale gear must be specialised for catapults too, but that is not a reason that it couldn't be used from a ski-jump right?
The Rafale M is the heaviest Rafale version with around 10t empty weight, but that is still less than the weight of a Mig 29K and it also has a good t/w ratio, so I don't see a reason why it couldn't be used from such carriers too.
However, Gorshkov and Vikrant major role will be maritime patrol in the around our costal lines, so the major role for the fighters will be the anti-ship. Not even air defense is really a matter, because none of our opponents have a carrier fleet at the moment. So for such an easy job, Mig 29Ks will be more than sufficiant and cost-effective. IAC 2 instead is meant for expanding Indias power, which means air combats, strikes against ships and land targets are possible, so we need more capable figthers for that carrier and not Mig 29K, let alone N-LCAs.

Why is INAF is selecting different types intead of comiting with the single one. Because it will be easy and cheaper to maintain MiG-29Ks because of the fact that most of the spares could be made in India and it would easier for pilot training as well. Also in the senario of war it would be easy to transfer like engine, airframe or even avionics components from one carrier to another via Chopper.
Although you might know that Rafael M is a single seat carrier born fighter and doesn't have dual seat version(due un-availabilty of funds) and also F-18E/F is catapult launch fighter.

I am sorry but wasn't it the other way around???? We rejected the Gorkshov but then deal was made more lucrative by offering Mig-29's and Gorkshov for free....Was that the case or mig-29's were always pegged with AC???
