MIG-29K Thread

Why is INAF is selecting different types intead of comiting with the single one. Because it will be easy and cheaper to maintain MiG-29Ks because of the fact that most of the spares could be made in India and it would easier for pilot training as well. Also in the senario of war it would be easy to transfer like engine, airframe or even avionics components from one carrier to another via Chopper.

Nishan, it is not unusual to use different types of fighters (mainly for different roles) on a carrier. The US us now F18 Hornets, which will be replaced by F35 and besides them F18 super Hornets. The French use Rafale and Super Étendards, the Russians use, Su 33 and Su 25.

I am sorry but wasn't it the other way around???? We rejected the Gorkshov but then deal was made more lucrative by offering Mig-29's and Gorkshov for free....Was that the case or mig-29's were always pegged with AC???

Not as far as I know, because the Russians gave us Gorshkov for free, we only paid for the refurbishment and the Mig 29Ks.

Actually u didn't realize that they belong their own origin and that is they can be easily supported in terms of spares and maintainance. Operationally they are meeting the requirements of their respective roles like F-18E/F is dedicated to strike and F-35 to intercept enemy air-defences through stealth. For France they are replacing Super Entendards with rafeal, but by the is Rafeal N(Dual seat trainer version of Rafeal M ) is ready or not. And will INAF will is select it in only single seat condition and if they do where and how they are going to train the new/Rookie Pilots.

Can you give brief description on Gripen Naval Version with pics and why is the typhoon been considered as carrier born fighter among F-18E/F,MiG-29Ks,Rafeal & Gripen. Is INAF evaluating Su-33 or its dual seater for strike and multirole like IAFs Su-30 MKI.

IAF Mig-29 , already has production line in India and service centres also exist. This makes it a perfect fit for IN , it was also already developed and ready.
Iirc, India does not have production lines for MiG-29, that is why we are resorting to buying the aircraft from the Russians. Though the then Soviets had offered ToT for MiG-29 GoI had for some weird reason refused the offer. If I am correct, there was furore in the parliament over this refusal.

I don't believe that is entirely true ,

We do have some ToT at least when it comes to spare parts , and we can make the RD-33 under license

India to License-build MiG-29 Engines

Earlier decisions to not take Mig-29 ToT , would have been due to the the LCA program and Limited funding.

Back them we could only support a handful projects , now have dozens.

I am not sure how India at that could have afforded all this including ToT when India had to get Mig 29 on loans from Soviet Union in 1985 of $800 million.

time's isin't always the same !!!

back there we had economy crises... but now we are one of the worlds fastest growing economy !!!!!!!

I found these pics online on MIG-29Ks in Indian Navy colours but looking very old and dirty aswell as a very visible RED STAR (which has tried to be removed)

Indian Armed Forces

so are these demonstraters, if so why paint them in IN colours, or are they what we have flying down in GOA right now?

The first four Mig-29K/KUB aircraft, IN 801, IN 802 (Mig29K) and IN 671, IN 672 (Mig-29KUB) were formally inducted into the Navy on 19 Feb 2010 at INS Hansa during a ceremeony replete with flying displays by Hansa based units including a display by the Sagar Pawans of INAS 551, an IL-38SD, two Do-228, a SHAR T4I of INAS 552 and a Chetak of INAS 321.

Hope this helps:cheers::cheers:

Hi Nishan_101, this is not true, because only because the fighters have the same origin, doesn't meant they use the same spares! F18SH is from Boeing, use the GE 414 engine and APG 79 radar, F35 instead is from LM, use the PW F135 engine and the APG 81 radar. How should these fighters have common spares and maintenance if they are so different? The only commonality they will have, is the same US weapon pack, but even N-LCA, Mig 29K and a future N-FGFA would use mainly the same Indo-Russian weapon mix.

Operationally they are meeting the requirements of their respective roles like F-18E/F is dedicated to strike and F-35 to intercept enemy air-defences through stealth.

Exactly and so does Rafale and Super Entendards, or Su 33 and 25, or even N-FGFA and Rafale.

For France they are replacing Super Entendards with rafeal, but by the is Rafeal N(Dual seat trainer version of Rafeal M ) is ready or not. And will INAF will is select it in only single seat condition and if they do where and how they are going to train the new/Rookie Pilots.

First of all, the Super Entendards are still be used for strikes alongside Rafale and will go on for some time, secondly Rafale M just like F35 is only available in single seat versions (Rafale N, because France did not funded it). Regarding the training, just try to find out how the Rafale and F35 pilots train and you will find out the answer.

Go through this thread and you will find good infos about the baval Gripen. EF was considered, because UK made some studies about a naval STOBAR version of the EF in the past, called Sea Typhoon.
Su 33 will not be produced anymore and Russia replace it with Mig 29Ks, IN was interested in a naval version of the MKI, but the Groshkov and the Vikrant will be to small to carry them

What you see in the picture is the Mig-29 KUB (twin seater) which Russia has never operated, as a matter of fact it first flew in 2007, so it would be impossible for it to be old. What happened was it was originally painted with the red star, and later on the star was removed.
