First solar-powered easy bike charging station inaugurated
The first-ever solar power-based easy bike charging station of the country was inaugurated yesterday at Keraniganj. The government had taken the initiative on an experimental basis, in cooperation with the Power Distribution Company, while also providing finance in conjunction with it, in order to reduce the increasing pressure on the national grid. Under this initiative, the Rural Electrification Board (REB) had constructed the first charging station at Keraniganj area of the capital.
REB has spent around Tk. 50 lakh on the station. It has been established on the rooftop of the Sunny Filling Station of Ruhitpur in Keraniganj. No extra land was required for this purpose. The station was providing charging services to easy bikes for the last few days on an experimental basis.
Quamrul Islam, the minister in charge of the food ministry, inaugurated the station as the chief guest. State minister for power, energy and mineral resources, Nasrul Hamid, was present as the special guest. Speaking on the occasion, Quamrul Islam said the charging station would inspire easy biker riders to legally charge their vehicles at the station. “They will not need to use illegal electricity and put pressure on the national grid.”
Nasrul Hamid pointed out that the government always favours the use of renewable energy. “This station is a testament to the government’s commitment,” he said. He also said that if this is popularized, it could create a great deal of employment opportunities. The government also wants to attract entrepreneurs to this sector through soft loans, he disclosed.
The station initially has provisions and the capacity to provide charging facilities to 20 to 22 easy bikes at a time. Dhaka Palli Bidyut Samity-2 general manager Md Rabiul Hossain said initially, the owners of easy bikes are being charged Tk. 50 per charging session. "We have been providing the service for the last couple of days. The feedback we have received so far is positive. However, the charging is better in sunny weather conditions," he explained.
Hossain added that the easy bike riders usually reach there at night, after riding the whole day. They are then provided the charging facilities through the batteries that are charged with sunlight during the day. After the use of solar power for household and irrigation purposes, this new initiative to tap sunlight has been launched by the government in areas that are still deprived of the national grid connection.
