Medium-range air defense system "Sky Dragon 50" for Morocco

Morocco introduced a new air defense system into the arsenal of the Royal Armed Forces, the medium-range air defense system "Sky Dragon 50" from China was introduced .

The system was brought in last December, after last year Morocco sent a number of officers and technicians from the Royal Artillery, radar specialists and air defense systems to China to train on the Chinese system, one of the most modern defense systems in the world.

The Chinese system can engage with 12 targets at the same time from 50 kilometers and height up to 20 kilometers.

The system consists of a three-dimensional search radar with a range of 150 kilometers, a command and control unit, a reloading unit and three missile launchers, each capable of firing four surface-to-air missiles.

The system is especially used to protect vital installations and land formations from various air threats such as attack helicopters, drones, fighter jets and cruise missiles, especially since the system can strike a very low target at a height of only 30 meters.

Military cooperation between Morocco and China is growing significantly, with the latter, along with medium-range air defense, incorporating more sophisticated systems.

Since the pre-recent deal, which has also included short-range air defense systems, medium-range missile launchers, tanks and radars, the Moroccan-Chinese military relations have become more strategic and will also include the transfer of some of China's military technology to Morocco.

Morocco is the western frontier and they should beef up these systems. It is a good news that they are focusing on the aerial and naval threats. Although they will not be able to achieve long range Shore Naval defence systems due to weapons control regime laws but combination of Air defence and Naval system will give them enough range and safe zone.

True, and they are getting the Amur Submarine(s) fro Russia to help in shore defences..what one can clearly see it that Morocco is concentrating on high tech systems and ToT like satellites and ISR planes.. they have also been one of the countries negotiating for the S-400 long range defence systems..But wit only 23 F-16 Blk 52 they are still weak in airforce..they need at least a 100 of 4++ generation to become potent somehow..

I think they don't need fighter jets too much because of their location. but they need naval defence and air defence more there are no hostile Airbase near them and any hostile country that can be a threat to them are in Europe and Israel which will under take any action to over throw regime (Libyan style) and their jets don't cover distance to get to them so their current strategy to acquire anti air is good decision. They are well superior for any threats from Sahara conflict.

Morocco being a close ally of the US, it is quite strange that it does not take the available possibility of buying F-16 block 40 or any other upgradable F-16s dirt cheap and pay only for upgrading them to the last V version!!!
