U.S. Marine convicted of urinating on corpses of Taliban insurgents

WASHINGTON | Thu Dec 20, 2012 9:36pm EST

(Reuters) - A U.S. Marine staff sergeant who urinated on dead Taliban insurgents and posed for photographs with the bodies has pleaded guilty to two charges in a military court, the Marine Corps said on Thursday.

His sentence was a reduction in rank and forfeiture of $500 in pay.

Staff Sergeant Joseph Chamblin pleaded guilty at a special court martial at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to dereliction of duty for failing to properly supervise junior Marines. He also pleaded guilty to wrongfully urinating on a deceased enemy combatant.

The incident occurred during a counter-insurgency operation in Helmand Province in Afghanistan in July 2011. It came to light in January this year when a videotape of the incident was posted on YouTube and other websites.

The video showed four men in camouflage Marine combat uniforms urinating on three corpses. One of them joked, "Have a nice day, buddy," while another made a lewd joke.

The video was one of a series of offensive incidents involving U.S. service members that roused Afghan ire and led to heightened tensions between Washington and Kabul earlier this year.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the actions in the video as "inhuman" and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta telephoned him to denounce the incident as "deplorable" and promise an investigation.

Chamblin was charged with failing to properly supervise junior Marines, failing to require junior Marines to wear protective equipment, failing to report the misconduct of junior Marines, failing to report the negligent discharge of a grenade launcher, and failing to stop the indiscriminate firing of weapons, the Marine Corps said in a statement.

Chamblin waived his right to a jury and pleaded guilty to two counts before a military judge, the statement said. The judge levied a penalty that including 30 days in jail and a $2,000 fine, but because of a pretrial agreement Chamblin received a lesser sentence.

The maximum penalty under the agreement was a reduction in rank to sergeant and a forfeiture of $500 in pay for one month, the statement said.

The Marine Corps declined to release details about the evidence or the findings of the investigation because, it said, cases were still pending related to the urination video incident.

Is his enough to stop this happening?
Frankly he should have been court marshaled as he still dont regret it.

Procedures were tightened up across the board and there have been no further report incidents thus far, so they seem to be working, at least from what is known. The punishment recommended by the judge was much harsher but was reduced by the higher brass.

A soldier is a well trained and disciplined person who follows orders and adheres to the code of conduct applicable to him. This guy was an animal, trash and a sub-human being a disgrace to any uniform.

Why?

And who did he do against?

A holy man?

No but a barbaric vermin who is even worse than the wildest of wild animals- a Taliban.

The horrors of a war and that too daily being blown up to bits can be very very soul shattering.

It is easy to sit and talk.

But if you were in his place and that was the body of the monster who killed many of whom you loved as your brother countrymen and fellow comrades, you will do the same.

Well he is a p*ssy, what else can you expect?

Same types sh!t their pants when faced with Talibans...and call "air support" in seconds...lol...
You have not the guts to face one of these guys. I may be Air Force but at least I had a chance to hit the field in Desert Storm and I did have a taste of what these guys had to face. Now multiply that 10 times in Afghanistan and Iraq. One of these Marines is a hundred times the man you claim to be. You are the typical keyboard warrior that even Air Force guys like me despises.

So what should they do?
Call out the Taliban and ask for a mano-e-mano with a talib. US has technological advantage, why should they not use it.

Heck, even if the Marine were have single combat with the Talib, the talib would be lying mutilated.

Well said, Tshering.

What did you expect from the Americans? They were both colonizers and oppressors, and so they stayed. And never change.

Far better than from the Russians.
And how many countries did the US 'colonized'?

If the US wanted, their Airforce and Navy could decimate most of the world put together, they could then occupy any country at will.

If you think that having bases in countries that have agreed to this = colonisation then you got another thing coming.

Of corse they agreed - country who do not agreed are bombed and their leaders killed.
May be you do not know that there hot occupation - with military bases and cold occupation - without them.
USA can occupay only weak countries - and only in the case nobody support the victim - as Iraq or Serbia or Afganistan or others.

Which US base is this pic showing in India???

I do not khow. May be it CIA base or something.

There are plenty of countries that don't have US bases.

Firstly that map is very wrong, neither Sri Lanka nor India has any US troops on its land.

And guess what, we haven't been bombed yet.
