Map of "New Silk Road"

To me it is more practical to go directly to Pakistan, and from there to India. If it costs you more than what you can recover, then it doesn't matter how "big" the "market" is. :azn:

High-speed rail: New Silk Road

Technology edge

China began purchasing high-speed rail technology in 2004 from France, Japan, Can-ada and Germany.

Six years later, China has developed its own high-speed rail systems, which run at over 350 kilometers per hour.

The high-speed rail line between Beijing and Tianjin, which started service in August 2008, was the first such train in China.

The Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway came into use late last year. It runs 990 kilometers between the Central China city and the booming industrial hub in the south, reducing the standard 12-hour-long trip to only three hours.

These are just two of 42 high-speed lines projected for completion in the country by 2012.

"For China, high-speed railways are both necessary and affordable," Lu said. "Its fast development is boosted by the country's domestic demand, stable financing and a sustain-ability-oriented development mode.

"The country's urbanization process offered opportunities for the massive construction of railway networks," he said, adding that a network of high-speed railways would dramatically "shrink" the country.

According to the plan proposed by the railways ministry, the country's total railway coverage will be more than 110,000 kilometers by 2012, with 13,000 kilometers being high-speed railway, forming the world's largest high-speed railway network.

Wang expects that China may spearhead a new global wave of railway development, and with that the ability to grab a big share of international markets with its cutting-edge safe technologies and low construction costs that will compete with the pioneers in the field, Japan and Germany.

"India would be our top target market in the future. And we are currently negotiating with the US, Russia and Poland," Wang said. "High-speed railways will become another brand of Made-in-China."

Japan, which first implemented a high-speed railway in 1964, has expressed concern that it wasted its chance to be a dominant player in the market.

Although Japanese railway technology is "one of the best in the world, it has failed to find its way into overseas markets," said an editorial in Japan's The Asahi Shimbun on February 1.

"The technology was so bent on Japanese standards that it developed in a very insular way. The rail industry has been very inward-looking," it said.

beijing wants to build two lines, one connects to south asian countries ,another one connects to west asia and europe ,maybe one of them will extend to somewhere around india, but i don't think this silk road will go though india, because this new silk road also is china's new energy line

I personally think the line going west should go directly to Islamabad. Why does the train must pass through India to reach Pakistan???:pakistan: Also, it would be good if it can go to Cairo and down to Africa in the distant future.

You are absolutely right. India is neither friendly to Pakistan nor to China and having a link from China to India and then to Pakistan would mean compromise on militry doctrine. Pakistan and China are discussing direct link since 2009 and even feasibility study is underway.

China-Pakistan rail link on horizon

slamabad on Monday awarded a Rs72 million (US$1.2 million) contract to an international consortium to carry out a feasibility study for establishing a rail link with China to boost trade relations between the two countries.

The study will cover a 750-kilometer section between Havellian and the 4,730-meter-high Khunjerab crossing over Mansehra district and the Karakoram Highway. Havellian is already linked with the rest of the rail network in Pakistan; the Chinese will lay track within their territory up to Khunjerab, linking Pakistan with China’s rail network.

Reason it wont go through India is:
Chinese are doing it for commercial reasons

1. Pakistan-India relations will not improve as there are confessions from terrorists that bombings in Lahore were planned in Indian consulates in Afghanistan.
Agreed that will result in non-materialization of this project. Thus it will be harmful to both India and Pakistan

2. India will delay the project as it delayed the IPI project, and finally Pakistan made a deal with the Iranians, and progress have been made in that project now without india.
IPI was not delayed by Indians. It was delayed by the Iranians who were not giving us the clear price.

3. The Chinese are very intelligent and talented people, dont be surprised if they can build a railway route through the Himalayas. They already built a railway route through the Himalayas to their Tibet province.
If that happens it will be a civil engineering marvel. However, to date KKH is not a dual carriage road???? What will happen if they make a multi billion dollar bridge and it fell down every year due to snow and avalanches

Because this is how our Trains will look like when they will come from India.

China's communist party is going to commit a blunder, let it commit. Let China commit the blunder and learn what it means to commit a blunder. Only then China will try to avoid committing blunder again, if China will manage to survive at all. A direct railway link between China and India might make money for Beijing but will destabilize China's Tibet region.

Let the Chinese leadership learn the world beyond their frontiers. What the Chinese people should do is to make it sure that if Lhasa comes under Tibetan terrorist attacks, the Chinese communist leadership will be held responsible.
