Manmohan Singh set to skip CHOGM meet in Sri Lanka

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to skip next week’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka due to stiff opposition from major political parties in Tamil Nadu and also his colleagues from the state.

Congress sources told HT that it would be “very difficult” for the PM to participate in the meet given the strong sentiments against the visit. A formal call, however, would be taken in a day or two. The summit is scheduled to be held in Colombo from November 15 to 17.

Critics of Sri Lanka say that Colombo committed “war crimes” against innocent Tamils during the final stages of the war that destroyed rebel group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in May 2009. Sri Lanka has also been accused of going back on promises to give autonomy to Tamil areas.

The issue of whether or not the PM should attend the Commonwealth meet came up for detailed discussion on Friday at a meeting of the Congress core group, an informal but important interface between the government and the party.

It is learnt that defence minister AK Antony and finance minister P Chidambaram expressed strong reservations against the visit.

A fresh appeal by DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi that Singh to “act according to his conscience” and boycott the meeting also weighed heavily on the Congress leadership.

Government sources said external affairs minister Salman Khurshid would represent India once the PM formally decides to stay away from the meeting.

Last month, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced his decision not attend the meet to protest against Sri Lanka’s failure to probe its troops over allegations that they killed up to 40,000 civilians while defeating the Tamil rebels.

Mr. Maun mohan Singh by not attending CHOGM you will land yourself in irreversible irretrievable cleft of diplomatic uncertainties which will not be shrewd patently practical political move. Short circuiting the CHOGM for short term shortsighted gains envisaged by congress by appeasing its present and/or potential national or regional collaborators will not balance any political scales which any way are destined to decisively tilt against it due to ever increasing burdening weights of serial syndicated scandalous swindles & mega corruptions being indulged by its UPA partners with unchallenged impunity. :astagh::bad::hitwall:

A wise decision, by the world's most wisest PM , or he may end up like Rajiv Gandhi

Mr Manmohon Singh-PM of India is expected to skip the Commonwealth Summit meeting due to many protest by political parties and groups against the Rajapaksa regime of Sri Lanka.India should be represented by President Pranab Mukherjee and Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid. Complete absence at the summit by India will affect bilateral relationship.

This bl00dy Congress dispensation foisted on India needs to be sent packing at the earliest. Thanks to their theory of 'coalition dharma', pandering to the whims and fancies of regional parties, they are leading us toward international isolation.

Do these a$$holes even have a foreign policy? We've painted ourselves into a corner as these idiots don't have the balls to face the regional satraps due to vote bank politics.

If Congress comes back to power, it's the end for India.

poor MMS .........dosnt know that even though he skips CHOGM....it wont get him any tamil votes....we will still loose in 2014

Are you sure that MMS or for that matter any PM of India needs to attend the meeting?

Elite member?? I joined only recently and what's rank? I've never noticed.

I think it's a blessing in disguise.. Now SL will have no qualms about incisive foreign policy decisions to make.. No obligations to anyone..It's a win win situation for the country.. The CHOGM will go ahead and Rajapaksa will be given the presidency for two years.. Yet again weak govt in India sacrificed it's vital strategic foreign policy to regional extremists.. Worse part they alienated the whole country not just the regime including those who had empathy towards India

Funny thing is neither national parties will win in TN next elections.. It's the only state in India that have never elected leaders on national platform but on regionalism and separatism.. And always governed by B grade Tamil movie actors

BJP have conveniently kept quite mum on the controversy given it's close ties with SL.. Especially Sushma Swaraj and Narendra Modi.. Interesting to see how Indo/Lanka relations will proceed from now on

There is a sympathy wave for the fishermen and the tamils, the political parties are just trying to cash votes.
