The 1964 Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act in India was enacted to prohibit the sale and consumption of beef only, not any other meat.

This was used by the Calcutta High Court when it banned cow slaughter on Eid-ul-Adha, followed by Karnataka & other states:

Mangalorean.Com- Serving Mangaloreans Around The World!

The act doesnot ban.The BJP is trying to ban it.
BTW In a related development, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) protested against the cow slaughter ban and criticised the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state for hurting the sentiments of Dalits, Muslims and backward classes with an anti-retrograde measure.

"Each individual is entitled to his/her own food habits. The government has no right to force people to not consume a particular food," BSP vice-president N. Mahesh said.

Laws that prohibit animal sacrifice
Though Article 51 of the Directive Principles of the Constitution of India states that individuals should show kindness and compassion towards all living beings, animals continue to be slaughtered in a cruel and illegal manner for the purpose of sacrifice.
Specific laws prohibiting animal sacrifice have been passed only in a few states of India. These states are, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. The rules regarding animal

sacrifices in all these states roughly contain the same facts. Section 2(b) of the Andhra Pradesh Animals and Birds Sacrifices (Prohibition) Act, 1950, defines "sacrifice" as the killing or maiming of any animal or bird for the purpose of any religious worship or adoration.
These Acts specifically prohibit any person from officiating, performing, assisting or participating in any sacrifice. It also maintains that no one can knowingly allow such a sacrifice to be performed at any place of religious worship or place under his control.
The penalty for contravention extends to a fine and/ or imprisonment.
In so far as the other states which lack such specific Acts, the following legal provisions can be used:

Local Municipal Corporation Acts : These Acts prohibit the slaughter of any animal within a corporation area, other than in the licensed slaughter house. Since temples and streets, where animal sacrifices usually occur, are unlicensed, it becomes illegal to slaughter animals at these places.

Pollution Act : This Act incidentally comes under the Local Corporation Act. It prohibits any act of animal sacrifice in a public place on the ground that they will cause pollution.

Indian Penal Code(IPC) : Section 268 of IPC, 1860 enables a person to file a charge sheet to prohibit the sale of the meat obtained from the sacrificed animals, in any public place, other than those which are registered for this purpose.

Also. There is no law against selling beef in India. Beef is sold in all major super markets all over India. Selling of beef is restricted only in places with large Hindu populations, I'm not sure if it is completely banned in these areas, but why would anyone want to sell beef in a Hindu locality. It's like selling Pork in a Muslim locality.
Kerala would be the first place one would start any kind of beef products business. Consumption of beef in Kerala is higher than any other state in India.

You are saying same thing every time. I am saying "It Should be banned" even when it doesn't make any difference to 84% Population. Even PIGS are not slaughtered in same way, if you are aware of. All religion sentiments should be cared. India is not Islamic country, you should remember.

You must be pretty dense to confuse a state specific law to constitutionally approved law of republic of india!

.
Trust me when I tell you this, any animal law that successfully gets passed is targeted only at prevention of animal cruelty. Anything with religious overtones gets knocked over by the various other stake holders in the central/state government.

.
Cow slaughter banned in karnataka.....? just now am coming after having beef fry and porotta

.
If it is, why aren't Indian Muslims constitutionally allowed to celebrate the Eid ul Adha the way it is traditionally?

joker secularism itself means seperate religion from constitution, then how can muslims constitutionally celebrate eid wat ever the way it is traditionally hwhich ever way??

He is a resilient fellow.

Under the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Act, 1950, one needs to produce a ‘fit-for-slaughter’ certificate. The animals included in the Act are bulls, bullocks, cows, calves and buffaloes of all types/ages. The certificate is given if animal is over 14 and/or unfit for work or breeding.

Dude for the last time. All these acts are to prevent slaughter in any place except licenced slaughter houses. Look up the meat production of every state you have quoted. Everyone produces beef.
West Bengal animal slaughter act was mainly targeted at the Hindu tradition of animal sacrifice during Durga Pooja and for Kali pooja.
So you have admitted that cow/cattle sacrifice is prohibited in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry. Why is that?
