A man was axed to death on Wednesday over allegations of blasphemy in Punjab's Jhang district, it emerged on Friday.

Police said Taqi Shah, a religious scholar from the Shia community, and his friend Hasnain Shah, were roaming a local mela (festival) in Basti Murad of Shorkot tehsil on March 24 when they were attacked by a man on foot.

Taqi, who was on a motorcycle, lost his balance and fell on the road upon which the attacker axed him (Taqi) to death, according to police. His friend Hasnain remained safe in the incident and is a witness in the case.

The suspect later fled the scene.
Police then reached the spot and shifted the body to a nearby hospital for post-mortem examination.

Jhang District Police Officer (DPO) Sarfraz Virk told Dawn the victim was also facing charges of committing blasphemy against the companions of the Prophet in a court. The blasphemy case against him was registered in 2019.
Police have registered a murder case against three suspects including one identified man and two unidentified persons at Shorkot City police station on the complaint of a family member of the deceased.
The complainant alleged that the victim was killed by the primary suspect after developing a dispute with him "while playing volleyball".

Investigation Officer Tariq Mehmood said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday evening and was presented before a magistrate who sent him to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

He said the suspect and the victim had engaged in a quarrel while playing volleyball some days ago and the matter had been resolved at the time.
However, the suspect later developed a grudge against Taqi and attacked him with an axe and killed him.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer told Dawn that the suspect had killed the man after accusing him of committing blasphemy against companions of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

He said the suspect and the victim had also developed a dispute over playing volleyball some days ago. “The suspect in his statement confessed to have killed the victim, Taqi Shah, over blasphemy allegations,” the officer added.

Human rights groups say blasphemy laws are often misused to persecute minorities or even against Muslims to settle personal rivalries. Such accusations can end up in lynchings or street vigilantism.
Up to 80 people are known to be imprisoned in the country on such charges — half of whom face life in prison or the death penalty — according to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom.

Accused confesses to killing victim over blasphemy allegations
While speaking about the matter, Jhang District Police Officer (DPO) Sarfraz Virk informed that the accused had killed Taqi Shah over allegations of blasphemy. He said that the victim was accused of insulting companions of prophet Muhammad. “The suspect in his statement confessed to having killed the victim, Taqi Shah, over blasphemy allegations,” Virk added. As per the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, around 80 people are serving life imprisonment or facing the death penalty in Pakistan over blasphemy charges.

This reminds me of the Ilm-ud-din.

The 19 year old Son of a poor Indian Muslim carpenter who in 1929, assassinated a book publisher named Mahashe Rajpal of the Arya Samaj for publishing the book Rangila Rasul, which was considered blasphemous.

He was represented by No less than Barrister Muhammad Ali Jinnah for his appeal trial in Lahor High court.

No less than the poet Iqbal, the spiritual founder of Pakistan, requested Jinnah, the father of Pakistan, to plead on behalf of Ilm-ud-Din,

Ilm-ud-din however was awarded the death penalty and was executed. More than 600,000 people attended his Funeral.

Poet Iqbal was one of the carriers of the funeral bier. At that moment, Iqbal said, "Asi wekhde reh gaye, aye Tarkhaana da munda baazi le gaya" (The educated people like us just could do nothing, while this carpenter''s son scored a point).

Ilm-ud-Din of course knew nothing about Rajpal and the controversy surrounding the book he had published; and didn''t want to know anything about the issue. He heard a cleric ranting against Rajpal near a mosque; an angry mob was baying for Rajpal''s blood: "Oh Muslims! The devil Rajpal has sought to dishonour our beloved Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W.) by his filthy book!" . So hejust bought a dagger and stabbed Rajpal to death on September 6, 1929.

I believe pakistan made a film in 1978 lionizing him.

Today he is know as Ghazi Ilm-ud-Din Shaheed in pakistan. Pakistan also built a mosque in Mianwali prison, Ghazi Ilmuddin martyr mosque to offer him tribute.

I am glad to see that his legacy continues.

I am convinced that pakistan is slowly but surely molding itself to the ideas of Muhammed Ali Jinnah and Iqbal expressed in words and brought to life by their Actions. The journey so far has been exciting, I can't wait to see the finished Product.

I disagree. He brought it on himself. din't you read ? He was guilty of Blasphemy.

I only wonder if the murderer will be called a Gazi as they did with Ghazi ilm Din Shaheed

Great work by Ilm din. Proud of him and what he did

A crime was committed. Culprit arrested. Law will take its course. I think this toxic threat must be closed else a grand tournament of mud slinging will erupt here.

You shouldn't mock them. Imf has signed another agreement to give 1.3 b usd in assistance to Pakistan. No one else is so successful in getting aid as Pakistan is.
i was mocking the retard who was supporting and glorifying blasphemy killing .

.
If the guy has insulted Companions then right way is to alert the authorities, let the law take its course, this guy has no authority to be the judge, jury and executioner there is a reason why even in Shariah law there is a system to identify a crime, look into evidence , testimonies and character of those who are giving the testimonies then comes punishment but again this dude thinks that he did something great and will get Jannah for his action, but in reality he will be punished for his crime in this world and hearafter.
