Malaysian carmaker Proton to set up first South Asian factory in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Malaysia’s Proton will be setting up its first South Asian factory in Pakistan in a joint effort between the carmaker and its local partner Alhaj Automotive, Channel News Asia reported.


According to Malaysia's High Commissioner to Pakistan Ikram Mohammad Ibrahim, an agreement was inked by Proton and Alhaj Automotive in 2018.


“Proton felt the potential for its cars in Pakistan is huge, which led to its partnership with Alhaj Automotive to establish an assembly plant near Karachi in Sindh province," Ibrahim said.

He added, “This is significant because it will be Proton’s first (assembly) plant in South Asia because the population of Pakistan is 210 million.”


Ibrahim further sais the construction of the car plant was one of the important elements of bilateral trade and investment relationship between the two countries as Proton was Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s brainchild during his first tenure as the prime minister.


Both leaders he added, would also have an in-depth discussion on efforts to increase trade relations between the two countries.


The announcement comes on the back of the Malaysian prime minister’s three-day visit to the country on the invitation of PM Imran.


Dr Mohamad will be the Guest of Honour at the Pakistan Day Parade on March 23.


Moreover, the two leaders are expected to witness the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony of Proton’s plant on Friday.


Speaking about the trade between the two countries, Ibrahim said the two leaders would also have an in-depth discussion on efforts to increase trade relations between the two countries.


Last year, the total trade between Malaysia and Pakistan stood at RM5.91 billion, which was an increase of 2.5 per cent compared to RM5.76 billion in 2017.


Ibrahim said Pakistan is Malaysia’s largest export market in South Asia and the third for import destination. “In terms of bilateral trade, Malaysia is Pakistan’s 16th largest trading partner last year,” he said.

KARACHI: Renowned Malaysian car manufacturing company Proton has announced to establish a factory in Pakistan, Malaysian High Commissioner Ikram Mohammad Ibrahim said on Thursday.

This would be the company's first assembly plant set up in any South Asian country.

Ibrahim added that the announcement will be made formally by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad during his visit to Pakistan.

The agreement between Pakistan and Malaysia will be signed on Saturday, he said.

The High Commissioner further went on to say that the car plant will be established in Karachi, also known as the economic hub of Pakistan.

The Malaysian-based corporation, Proton was established in 1983 and has so far sold 3 million cars.

Proton cars are sold in more than 25 countries including Britain, Singapore and Australia.

No need to tell anybody to get lost. On the contrary, they can add value to our market.

I see Pakistan is becoming next Automotive hub.
If Pakistan establish Automotive Electronics and Mechanical R&D facilities than nobody can stop Pakistan.
I mean, if one manufacturer is coming to Pakistan, than it should find professionals, and supporting industry locally, and cheaper. Secondly, connecting manufacturing zones to railways will be another best step.

Overall, take finance division, HEC(universities, specially NED, Giki, IIEE, and NUST) Railways and ports(Karachi and Gawader) on board.

Highly unlikely. In Pakistan every car maker think that we have lot of money that why they charge us extraordinary compared to other international market.
Cars like Bravo/Prince are cheap because their original manufacturer are small players in China.

Geely recently became the majority stakeholder as proton has been struggling even after multiple gov bailouts.

This is the first vehicle launched with proton in malaysia. In china its called a different name.

It may be a new company with less experience or its vehicle may have less demand or spare parts. But once we are going to allow its entry in the market of pakistan and allow this industry to flourish. They are going to attain experience, quality of vehicle would become known to people and gradually spare parts of the vehicles would also be available in the market. In other words the concerns raised by some members in this thread can be adressed once we allow this potential entrant. Other than that the demand in the economy depends upon the various factors and these factors vary from economy(or country) to economy. So no one can judge the operations in one country to be same in other country. Plus there are certain perks of new entrants in the economy like employment,tax provision, sale of some raw material. So in my opinion it's a good news.
