Reported on: May 30, 2012 17:55 PM

Dhaka, May 30 (UNB) – Malaysia has offered to invest US$ 5-6 billion for the construction of the proposed Bangabandhu International Airport and submitted a proposal in this regard.

The visiting Malaysian team, led by the Malaysian Prime Minister’s special envoy for South Asia Dato S Samy Vellu, came up with the investment proposal during a meeting with Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Col (retd) Faruk Khan on Wednesday at the latter’s office.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Faruk Khan said Malaysia will provide 5-6 billion dollars for the construction of the Bangabandhu International Airport. The Malaysian delegation also submitted a written proposal in this regard at the meeting, he said.

Faruk Khan said the government has chosen seven sites for constructing the international airport. “If Char Janaza or Char Bilashpur in the vicinity of the Padma River is selected, it’ll be better. But there’s no doubt that the proposed airport will be built in and around the Padma Bridge.”

He said the government will embark on the project work as soon as the fund is available for its implementation.

The minister said the Malaysian team also expressed its interest to invest in the tourism sector of Bangladesh, especially Kuakata, Cox’s Bazar and the Sundarbans.

The delegation also expressed their willingness to invest for the development of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, if needed, under Public Private Partnership (PPP) or government-to-government agreement.

About their manpower import, the delegation told the minister that some 40,000 workers will be taken to Malaysia.

Dhaka, May 30 (bdnews24.com) – Malaysia has written to Bangladesh that it wants to provide up to $6 billion for the construction of the proposed Bangabandhu International Airport.

A delegation of the Malaysian government, led by special envoy for South Asia Dato Seri S Samy Vellu, submitted the proposal to Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Faruk Khan on Wednesday.

The delegation expressed its interest to invest $5-6 billion in the project to build the airport, the Minister said.

"Malaysia will move to invest in the project if Bangladesh makes a final decision about the airport," he said.

The Malaysian delegation was informed that the government shortlisted seven places to build the airport and would start the work if it gets fund, Khan said.

The government had to step back from building the airport at Arial Bill in Munshiganj amid protests by local people.

Khan said the airport would be built under Public Private Partnership (PPP).

The minister said Bangladesh needed a new airport to accommodate increasing air traffic.

"A total of 7.5 million Bangladeshis are working abroad. The government has a plan to send five million more. The demand of domestic flights is increasing too," he said.

Malaysia also expressed its eagerness to inject money for the development of Shahjalal International Airport, the minister said.

He also urged them to invest in tourism sector and help improve tourism infrastructure in Kuakata and Cox's Bazar.

Great move by Malaysia. Malaysia and Bangladesh are natural partner. We should extend our relationship with Indonesia and Brunei as well. We are bound with south east asian muslim more than middle eastern muslim. we are culturally and psychologically more similar.

What are the advantages we will achieve through this new airport and what will be the use of present one!! Yesterday there were news that Qatar will finance the construction of third terminal and a goods handling terminal at a cost of around 450 million usd. Why then spend money on that if new airport is on the card!!

Well they had a plan to make it a transit airport like Dubai or Singapore. Current arrangement is for our domestic need which is enough. When a investor put 6 billion dollar on the table they must have a plan for business. Nobody going to invest 6 billion dollar only for the business which cater our domestic need.

.
Thats a lot of money ...too much for a single airport

Good Move By Malaysia. Bangladesh Should Develop And Allow More Investment's.

.
Investment from Malaysia, an ASEAN-10 member nation, to make a transit hub airport is welcome. And kudos and thanks to Malaysia for hiring 40,000 more of our workers. ASEAN and Bangladesh relationship will get much closer in the future, as we improve our road/rail link with Myanmar and become an integral part of the greater Mekong sub-region of ASEAN:

1) Is building a new airport an economic or infrastructure priority for Bangladesh? Answer is NO.

2) Should this investment be used in more pressing needs of power generation and industrial expansion? Answer is YES.

3) Is current international airport is out of capacity? Answer is NO. Only around 70% capacity is currently been used and there is already airport land for runway and terminal expansion.

4) Has there been any fesibility study by independent body to justify need and usage fator for such new airport? Answer is NO.

5) Does an airport of this size cost $5-$6 billion? Answer is NO.

6) So why Awami league embarking on such white elephant project? Simple answer Bangobondhu name has became symbol and vehicle for Awami league corruption. This airport will be used for valuable land grab and massive multi billion dollars corruption by Awami league and their indian origin Malaysian partner in crime.

Hats off to you idune Bhai for this info. As soon as I saw Indian origin, I immediately knew there is trouble. Using the good name of Bumiputra's to sneak in? Caught red-handed. RAWamy traitors and their Indian bosses never cease to amaze with how low they can go.

This will definitely be one of the most expensive airports in the world, and not even the biggest.

It will be interesting to see the feasibility study for the new Dhaka airport.

Those airport were built couple of years ago. It will be good if you mention their present price. N the present airport will be built in 3 phase .... Time will require around 15 years. That is the reason why it is showing this high price.

Apart from Malaysia, Qatar has shown interest also to finance the project.

.
I think, the new airport will be limited to the newspapers. It is certain to become a paper tiger. Political govts in Bangladesh are shameless. This AL govt is using the name of Malaysia to build an airport that will not really be built. But, it may bring back AL popularity.

BD does not need any new airport. The present one can be enlarged with the addition of another runway at the BAF's small runway that runs parallel to the existing runway at Shahjalal airport. Govt can acquire this small runway, buy the land at the two ends and build a new runway there. It will serve the purpose perfectly.

I believe, Qatar has already promised (?) on the runway that I am talking about. This runway will serve the purpose. In addition, GoB should demolish the existing terminal building and construct a modern one.

.
wait. the article says the airport will be built around padma bridge, but another article confirmed that the toll charge for the padma bridge will be around $16. So each time I go the airport, we have to pay 16 dollars? Can someone clarify because this sounds insanely ridiculous.
