Malaysia offers $ 5-6bn for construction of Bangabandhu Airport

Those airport were built couple of years ago. It will be good if you mention their present price. N the present airport will be built in 3 phase .... Time will require around 15 years. That is the reason why it is showing this high price.

Apart from Malaysia, Qatar has shown interest also to finance the project.

Yeah but the labour is much much cheaper in Bangladesh compared to say the UK and South Korea. I also doubt if it will be largest airport in South Asia.

Do you have any more info about this project? How big the terminal is going to be, capacity, built area, number of runways?

For now I have the following 2 info... Airport Size will be 6000 acre means around 24000-25000 sq m and the cost includes a monorail and an elevated express way to connect the airport from the dhaka city.

In terms of capacity I read that it will have the same capacity of Suvarnabhumi Airport of Bangkok and all the modern facility of Dubai International Airport and that of Singapore airport. The main aim is to make Bangladesh a transit hub in the near future.

Nearly 6,000 acres will be acquired for the proposed world-standard airport and land acquisition will start once the Cabinet clears it.

Construction of the airport will be carried out in three phases for 15 years, but the airport will start operating on completion of the first-phase work, which will set up the rudder station, runway and the terminal building.

The proposed airport will be modelled on the Changi International Airport in Singapore or Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand.

The airport would be built on about 6,000 acres of land, said officials adding that the estimated cost of the project includes expenses for construction of an elevated expressway between Dhaka and the airport and a monorail.

Got some more information... The airport will have 3 run ways and 3 terminals and projected in the future will have the capacity to handle up to 45 million passenger.

The airport would be equal to the size of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. The airport will have three runways and all other modern facilities like Dubai or Singapore airports. An elevated expressway will link the airport with Dhaka.

Quoting acting Secretary of the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry, one report said: "Renowned airport builders will provide the fund for the project". In the first phase, to be completed by 2014, a dual terminal and a runway will be constructed. It will also include a parking bay to accommodate 75 aircraft, support facilities and structures including a large maintenance hangar, a fire station and workshop. Two more passenger terminals and runways are expected to be completed by 2020.

The airport has been planned in a way so that it can meet the demand of next hundred years.

Well if that info is correct, then it won't be the biggest airport in South Asia.

-Delhi International already has a capacity of 46 Million, and after the Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 comes on-line, the capacity will be over 100 Million Passengers per year.

- Mumbai International will be opening new Terminal with a capacity of 50 Million passengers by the end of this year.

That can be expanded depending on the needs. I am not sure whether that 45 million is the initial capacity or after completion of the 3 phase. It is quite understandable India has a population of 1.2 billion ... n most of the airline makes transit through Delhi or Mumbai.

But then again there is service quality and total price will depend on that. You can build a big terminal with a modest look at a low price or with a good look at a high price.

Detail is not there now... more can be said after coming out of more detail.

Funny you have to ask a foreign country to fund your airport

This is not only Bangladesh but even many western country do that. You need to see the amount to be invested in the airport.

@Roybot what is the total area of the Delhi and mumbai airport??

@Roybot what is the total area of the Delhi and mumbai airport??

Do you mean the total area, as in total land?

Mumbai is pretty cramped for space, its about 6 Km[SUP]2[/SUP]. Which is about 1500 acres.

Delhi is pretty massive with total area approx 26km[SUP]2[/SUP]. Which is about 6500 acres.

Banglore is 3500 acres, Hyderabad is 6000 acres.

But the total area hardly matters, what matters is total built area and terminal capacity, for it to classify as the Biggest airports in the world. For example, Dubai and Heathrow, two of the biggest airports in the world have area of approx 4000 acres and 3000 acres respectively.

Here's a list of Worlds Largest Airport Terminals,

1.Dubai T3= 12.76 million sq ft
2.Beijing T3= 10.6million sq ft
3.Hong Kong T1= 6.3million sq ft
4.Bangkok= 6.06million sq ft
5.Mexico T1= 5.9million sq ft
6.Barcelona T1= 5.85million sq ft
7.Delhi T3= 5.4million sq ft
8.Incheon= 5.35million sq ft
9.Madrid T4= 5.1million sq ft
10.Toronto T1= 4.9million sq ft

Are you sure there's not an extra zero in there? Cause 72000 is equal to almost 300 KM[SUP]2[/SUP]. Thats as big as the whole Dhaka city which is is around 350 KM[SUP]2[/SUP] !

<rant> Not large enough to do justice to the Bangabandhu brand! Next thing you know, she's going to build a Bagabandhu city the size of Dhaka division! She's crazy, nuts, insane! </rant> Captain Planet: no doubt there's an extra zero in there^^, lol.

1) Is building a new airport an economic or infrastructure priority for Bangladesh? Answer is NO.

2) Should this investment be used in more pressing needs of power generation and industrial expansion? Answer is YES.

3) Is current international airport is out of capacity? Answer is NO. Only around 70% capacity is currently been used and there is already airport land for runway and terminal expansion.

4) Has there been any fesibility study by independent body to justify need and usage fator for such new airport? Answer is NO.

5) Does an airport of this size cost $5-$6 billion? Answer is NO.

6) So why Awami league embarking on such white elephant project? Simple answer Bangobondhu name has became symbol and vehicle for Awami league corruption. This airport will be used for valuable land grab and massive multi billion dollars corruption by Awami league and their indian origin Malaysian partner in crime.

The main reason of your opposition is highlighted there. I dont care its bang bandu or shahid zam as long as we have a world class airport. The airport will be funded by a private owner so all your preconceived points are invalid here.

What's wrong with the current one?

You need to take the airport outside of city at some point of time as the city expand. The same reason we relocated Kurmitula to the Zia. The same logic applies when we relocate Zia to new location. You cant have a airport within the city when you strive for land.

That is still a lot of money. No doubt, there'll be strings attached. And there's still a lot of unused capacity in the current one. Why fix something that's not broken?

I don't think people here know just how badly CAAB is doing right now. And we are dreaming about some multi-billion dollar airport

And even if this joke becomes reality, do not be surprised if there's nothing "shiny" about the whole thing.
