Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS)
DHAKA, May 23 (BSS) - Malaysia is eager to establish 'circle connectivity' around the capital city to facilitate the movement of commuters and ease existing traffic congestion.
"Malaysia has proposed to build monorail around Dhaka city and she is eager to start feasibility study in this regard soon," Communications and Railway Minister Obaidul Quader disclosed this while launching a driving school run by BRAC in the city. Apart from this, Quader said Malaysian government also showed keen interest in providing 200 passenger coaches for Bangladesh Railway (BR) for increasing the capacity of BR.
The minister said the government has decided to lay dual gauge rail line on Dhaka-Chittagong route considering the importance of rail communication and demand for railway service.
In this connection, he said Indian government has showed interest to start feasibility study for the project.
Mentioning people's concern on road accidents, the minister said only joint efforts with the government's multi-functional initiatives can save the nation from road accidents.
"We have directed authorities concerned to expand and divide accident risk points of the highways for reducing road accidents," Quader added.
The minister said coordination with all stakeholders is a must to bring down road accidents across the country. He said the government has also decided to construct truck terminals at highways.
The function was also addressed, among others, by chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Ayubur Rahman Khan, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Barrister Mahbubur Rahman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Highways Police Humayuin Kabir and Chairman of Nirapad Sarak Chai and renowned film actor Ilias Kanchan.
