NEW YORK CITY: Pakistan teenager Malala Yousafzai told the United Nations on Friday that she would not be silenced by terrorist threats, in her first public speech since being shot by the Taliban.

“They thought that the bullet would silence us, but they failed,” Malala said on her 16th birthday, which she spent making calls for greater global efforts to get children into schools.

“The terrorists thought that they would change my aims and stop my ambitions, but nothing changed in life, except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, courage and fervour was born,” she said in a speech given several standing ovations.

The passionate advocate for girls education was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman as she road on a school bus near her home in Pakistan's Swat Valley on October 12 last year.

She was given life-saving treatment in Britain where she now lives, but the attack has given new life to her campaign for greater educational opportunities for girls.

Gordon Brown, the former British prime minister and UN special envoy for education, hailed Malala as “the bravest girl in the world” as he presented her at the UN Youth Assembly.

Appreciate her courage, but there are several more girls like her who faced worse and still continue to fight for education.

bravest person in Pakistan , braver than most of the countrymen ! she had the courage to stand up to the cowards who hold expertise in butchering weak and unarmed people unlike many And this is why i think Pakistan will IA survive "" the courage of this little girl gave this nation a hope , a hope that no matter how mean and ruthless the forces of darkness (the religious extremists) will become there are few people who will stand up and put them to shame ..

Salman Taseer was a shaheed and Malala Yousufzai is a ghazi .I have the highest regard for this little angel

She should speak in Pakistan, but of course this is now being done to to promote her self-image and career on the international stage. Her father must be a happy man, his daughter has gained international stardom. Won't be long now until she is given scholarships and free admission to top Universities. Her family now lives in UK, the most "P a k i" Mirpuri infested land there is...

GOD bless her soul ... and death to Taliban .

No doubt that there are many girls like Malala in KPK & in Pakistan who bravely fight against the odds to gain education. However, after hearing her speak at the UN, biggest forum in the world; my admiration for her poise and self-confidence has increased ten folds. She was no a bit overawed by the occasion. It looks as the little girl from Swat was born into the international stage.

I pray to Allah to keep her safe?

There is something going on with this girl and her story.
Something that goes beyond her speech and defiance for taliban.
Some vested interests, not to blame her, she is an innocent child.

Anyway, God bless her, she is a symbol of hope for universal access to education in Pakistan.

I praise her bravery and courage but have thought.....

Giving her new lives in new country peaceful
Giving her high education and speech right
Giving her more honor and free education
Giving her more international girl symbol

How about millions girls struggling in Pakistan? Who will give them same rights as Malala?
No-one, no will care them, just Malala.

and what's your beef with her or her fame? After what she went through, she deserves it. and don't forget she represents a positive, progressive, resilient, brave aspect of Pakistan and Pakistani women. God bless her and protect her and make her very successful. Ameen.

Taliban just shot themselves in the foot by trying to kill her :D .. If I survived a Taliban head-shot i'd want to be on TV too...

She has not said anything controversial till now .. Usually these things(vested interests) starts working after her fame is adequately built up..

She's an inspiration to many!! Hope it gives courage to the other girls who want to study.
