LHC for action against diplomats violating law
Tuesday, 15 Dec, 2009

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khwaja Muhammad Sharif has directed the government to take action against diplomats found involved in illegal activities in Pakistan.

The chief justice, hearing a petition about the alleged presence and illegal activities of Blackwater and Dutch nationals in Pakistan, observed on Monday that courts would not spare any offender of law in the country.

The petition was filed by the Watan Party Pakistan through Hashim Shaukat Khan, party’s Punjab president.

Justice Sharif disposed of the petition with directions to the government to take action against foreigners found involved in illegal activities or roaming in vehicles bearing fake registration plates.

Interior Secretary Qamaruz Zaman stated the government was taking action against diplomats violating the law of land.

He said an official of the US embassy had been deported for violating law and misbehaving with a police official in Islamabad.

Also, an officer of the Foreign Ministry stated before the judge the government could not take action against diplomats as they enjoyed diplomatic immunity.

He said two security guards of the Dutch embassy were arrested by police in Islamabad but were released after the intervention of the Dutch ambassador in October.

The chief justice said, ‘We should act as an honorable and responsible nation like Iran.’

Petitioner’s counsel Barrister Zafarullah Khan said American and Dutch nationals were roaming on the streets of Islamabad with sophisticated weapons and harassing locals as well as police personnel. He said even under article 29 of the Vienna Convention 1961 diplomats did not enjoy any immunity for criminal activities.

He said the Inter-Services Intelligence director general had brought to the notice of the CIA chief during his visit to Pakistan last month that the US intelligence agency was involved in terrorist activities in Pakistan.

He said the police had caught US and Dutch nationals with weapons and vehicles bearing fake registration numbers in Islamabad, but no action had been taken against them.
