A strong delegation of shipbuilders and allied industries from the state is all set to visit South Korea on July 22 for further discussions on collaborative partnerships for the 32,000 crore mine counter measure vessel project that Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is building for the Indian Navy.
Panaji: A strong delegation of shipbuilders and allied industries from the state is all set to visit South Korea on July 22 for further discussions on collaborative partnerships for the 32,000 crore mine counter measure vessel project that Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is building for the Indian Navy.
The companies that will be going to South Korea include Dempo Shipbuilding and Engineering, Timblo Shipyard, Goa Shipyard and others. "This is a shortlisted group and the purpose of the visit is to have serious discussions for the MCMV ship project," chairman and managing director Shekhar Mital said.
Goa Shipyard will play a key role in helping the discussions reach a fruitful end and to this effect, they have instituted a special 'Make in India' cell of three officers to facilitate investment and resolve queries regarding the mine counter measure vessels.
Goa Shipyard has been picked by the ministry of defence to build 12 minesweepers through collaboration with an international firm.
Confederation of Indian Industry, in association with the Busan chamber of commerce and Goa Shipyard, had held a path-breaking conference in June to foster tie-ups and technology transfer between shipbuilding companies of the two nations. The port town of Busan is home to some of the best shipbuilding and allied companies, including Samsung Thales, Kanganam Corp and Lignex1 among others.
Two delegations from South Korean shipbuilding and marine ancillary firms had visited Goa to explore opportunities to invest in India and to tap into the prospective growth in the merchant and naval vessel construction sector.
The success of the South Korean shipbuilding industry is its efficient supply chain and if this supply chain can be replicated in Goa through partnerships with local companies it could reduce the cost of the minesweeper project by 15-20%, vice-chairman Indian chamber of commerce in Korea Parth Sharma said.
The idea is that these companies will set up manufacturing bases in Goa and will not only cater to the minesweeper project but also for requirements of all shipyards in India
