INS Viraat, the Navy's only aircraft carrier, is currently getting a major overhaul at the shipyard in Kochi which will allow it to serve till 2016.

The British-made carrier has been in service for the past 53 years - it was first with the UK Navy, and then with the Indian navy for 28 years.

The effective life of any ship with the best of refits and repairs is about 40 years. The INS Viraat has beaten that average handsomely.

After its hull is repaired in Kochi, it will sail to Mumbai for other repairs and is unlikely to join the Navy before July.

"This is the last major refit that INS Viraat is likely to see" a senior navy official told NDTV.

Its replacement, the INS Vikramaditya, which is being bought for 12,500 crores from Russia, will reach India in 2014, and not November, as last promised by Russia. The induction of the 45,000-tonne aircraft carrier that can carry about 30 aircraft has already been delayed by a year, provoking a sharp reprimand recently for Moscow by Defence Minister AK Antony.

Another two aircraft carriers, which are the largest warships to be made by India, are also running behind schedule. They are being built at the Kochi shipyard and are unlikely to be available to the Navy before 2018.

They are likely to be named the INS Vikrant, the warship bought from the UK, which joined the Indian Navy in 1957 and was decommissioned after 40 years.

With the US likely to shift its focus from the Gulf to Asia Pacific, India is expected to exert a stabilising effect in the area. Besides, with the increased militarization of the Indian Ocean region - because of the increased American and Chinese presence - India needs to have more assets in place to be protect its trade and boundaries.

This has become a joke. Last time Antony said there will be penalty clauses in case of further delays. Will he act on his word?

Couldn't get the "Russian delay" part
Are there any fresh delays in Vikramaditya handover after the boiler failure incident or if the latest October-November 2013 deadline will be met?

I'll wait for official Russian and India navy comment rather than some noob news reporter.

False Headline...Its an overhaul to extend its life not just repairs...

I reddened that part in the report. That latest deadline won't be met either. 2014 at the earliest. Russia's deadlines are like mirages, they keep receding when we get close to them.

@janon that is nothing new, the news has been TWISTED.

The handing over of the carrier will be taking place in Nov. this year in Russia.

It will take 2-3 months for the carrier to reach Indian shores, so that means it will reach India in Jan-Feb 2014.

This was very much part of the plan.

Destroyers as a substitute for aircraft carriers? Dude, those are two completely different things. The only commonality is that both are ships.

As far as destroyers are concerned, we have our own Kolkata class destroyers, and their follow on (stealthy) design, which suit our needs handsomely. We don't need foreign destroyers any more.

Well, I hope so, that it is a comprehension error by the reporter and not yet another delay. Let's wait and see.

yea but they not like the aegis aegis can take on an aircraft carrier any given day it has too much destruction power in a conftration you wouldhaveto load the missile onthe aircraft fly it from the carrier and then drop it onaegis on aegis track lock and fire and see the destruction
specially stealth aegis if india gets that china will be scared and might not help pakistan as much as it does now militarily because

We are already having an awesome navy, which is the cake. Aircraft carriers are added assets which are iceing on a cake and can wait.
But these delays succks!

I think that in the INS Viky saga we are deliberately forgetting that we will add 4 important ships this year if not more:

INS Kamorta Stealth Corvette.
INS Kolkata Stealth Destroyer.
INS Trikand Stealth Frigate.
& atleast one of the GSL's Stealth OPV INS Sunanyna.

Anyways, INS Viky will be added come Nov. 2013.

EDIT: Not to forget, in all probability the biggest prize - INS Arihant.

...
Looks like some journos have strated treating news as fashion industry which picks up old fashion and sells it as new....not worthy of saying a bit more than this.
