Rs 25 Lakh Sports Car Avanti
----------------------------

Dilip Chhabria of DC Design is taking the Avanti into serial production and with a price for Rs. 25 Lakhs has a good game on his hands. Given property rates, industrial growth and the uptake in farming, there's millions who could afford this sports car. And 'Sports Car' can mean anything. A light, small engined vehicle with a good hybrid or high torque can pass off as a sports car. I remember there was another Co., San Motors, who were selling a very hatch-backish 'sports car', haven't heard much about them lately. I feel it would be a hit in Pakistan for the same reasons. DC Design to Give India Its First Sports-Car - Priyanka Pani

Mumbai, Oct. 2:

If you admired the Aston Martin Vanquish which James Bond drove in Die Another Day, then you must feel proud of the fact that it was designed by an Indian. So, Dilip Chhabria, who started off as an auto designer in 1993, is on his way to becoming a niche auto manufacturer.
Avanti

His firm DC Design, renowned in the industry for concept cars and prototypes, plans to raise around Rs 60 crore through debt and equity in the next three months to fuel the expansion plans of its sports-car venture, ‘Avanti.’

“We aim to become a niche car maker and hence we have launched Avanti, a luxury Indian sports-car. We are in talks with a few private equity players, both domestic and international. However, we want to create more value so that we dilute less,” Chhabria said.

Avanti would be the first sports car to be designed and manufactured in India. The car’s prototype has been showcased at the 11th Auto Expo last month and has been priced at Rs 25 lakh, Chhabria said.

“We already have got a good number of booking applications and plan to roll out 300 Avanti cars in the first year itself. It will be manufactured in the Talegaon facility early next year, and will be delivered around October next year. The reason behind making a sports-car was that none of the Indian auto makers have thought about its potential,” he said.
Annual production

DC Design already has three manufacturing units in Pune, with an annual production of just 500 cars per annum. The company plans to ramp up the number to 1,000 this year. At present, the company makes car accessories and also multi-ultility vehicles (MPVs), which range from Rs 6-60 lakh. However, the company declined to give out any other financial details.

Chhabria, who studied transportation design in California, used to customise vanity vans for Bollywood stars, and graduated to design and manufacture luxury cars for high networth individuals (HNIs). The company also plans to open its own outlets by this year-end .

Nissan Reintroducing Datsun to Emerging Markets

Much to the chagrin of competitors like Toyota (NYSE: TM ) and Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM ), Nissan (OTC: NSANY ) has announced plans to reintroduce its retired Datsun brand to emerging markets with a price range of $3,000-$5,000.

Without releasing exact figures, the investment in new-model development will be costly -- most likely in the $1 billion range. Nissan is attempting to tap into the emerging market category with a base price significantly lower than the $8,000 Tsuru model the company sells in Mexico.

Executive Vice President of Developing Markets for Toyota Yukitoshi Funo was quoted saying , "It's a big mistake to think you can introduce a cheap car in emerging markets and be successful," yet Nissan has decided to push forward, calling attention to its Datsun release with an ultra-low price tag.

Market share has been decreasing for Nissan in foreign markets and is expected to continue doing so. However, emerging markets continue to be an excellent source of revenue and product development for companies outside of the automotive industry, and Nissan wants to gain from that.

With an expected arrival date in 2014 and six new Datsun vehicles planned, the new model will be extremely basic (think manual transmission and few, if any, airbags) and the consensus even among Nissan employees is that the release will be difficult to pull off. Competitors also do not feel that there is enough demand to warrant the new model, let alone a new brand.

Datsun was discontinued in 1986, despite being the second largest selling foreign brand in the United States just a few years prior. The Nissan name was then introduced to take over the Datsun market and unify the company as a whole. According to The Wall Street Journal, the brand-name change caused much confusion and is, "still considered one of the worst marketing decisions in automotive history."

Nissan's Motor Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn believes reintroducing Datsun to the world will create excitement and help assist in his expectations of boosting Nissan's global market share from its current six percent to eight percent by 2016. Ghosn also expects emerging markets to take a larger share of auto sales and hopes that Datsun will reap the most benefits from increased demand.

There is immense criticism surrounding the new Datsun, from its predicted inability to tap into the emerging markets and its presence in the United States, (where the price tag is likely to become largely inflated). Whether the criticism is from bitter rivals that aren't offering as cheap of a car or from Nissan executives, the Datsun project has a team of members hard at work. Tata Motors' Nano, with a sale price of $1,900, was a disappointment in this sector, although the company blamed its lousy marketing campaign. Chrysler's Dodge (OTC: FIATY ) division debuted a stripped down model called the Razor at the 2002 North American International Auto Show for $14,500, but the production model never saw the light of day.

Shares of Nissan are flat premarket after having closed down 0.48 percent on Monday.

I dont see how this is going to be effective in a chase. :mod:

I have driven one. In the initial, its pretty surprisingly peppy and surges forward unlike what you expect from a 600 cc motor. That to with me and my 3 kids inside.

That added with its dimensions makes it perfect for our city traffic where more often than not the bad guys are 2 up on a bike.

Just make sure the keys are kept away from lady cops.

Thanks, we know rear-engine car's are fun. Porsche!
Seriously, I wish Tata went nuts with dozens of options, roll down roofs, electric and new headlamp Nano's.
Whynot do a new Mini, VW or Fiat 500 to the brand ?

85% Indian content!!!

Mercedes/Daimler seem to be in it for the long haul in India,I have heard they will be bringing out a new model every month until the end of 2013! I hope these become more and more widespread in India and give TATA and AL a run for their money and make the quality and FE shoot up. The timing seems to be right for BB with ever improving roads and increasing demands on quality.

India’s very own West Coast Customs, DC Design, is back on our front page for two creations that India will love. The first creation is a makeover to the interior of the Mahindra XUV500.

The forward section of the cabin has not changed much with a caramel color scheme consistently spread across the seats and dashboard.
The Lounge Package however has completely transformed its rear seat travel. The second and third row seats have been evacuated and in place a giant sofa is installed that provides Maharaja comfort for two occupants. DC has not detailed the modifications, but we expect these seats to be multi-way adjustable and support every muscle in the human torso!
Occupants are further spoilt with the installation of two giant LCD displays on the front seat backs. Below the LCD displays, aircraft-style foldable food trays are fitted. DC has restyled the ceiling, endowing it with fancy lights that look stunning in the dark.
To break the monotony, DC has accented the cabin with wood grain and chrome inserts.

Chennai (Automobile captial of South Asia)

Polished to a gleaming finish by robots, three cars roll out every minute at the manufacturing plants of the top guns of the automobile industry, who have set shop on the city's outskirts. Coming in at a close second are the commercial vehicles, that are churned out at a speed of one every 75 seconds.

With land at throwaway prices and cheap electricity, Chennai has attracted names like Ford, Hyundai, BMW, and most recently, Nissan and French brand Renault. The state government's keen interest in providing a smooth transport corridor for these plants has compelled the global giants to expand operations here.

As a port city, Chennai has probably given the biggest advantage for the auto giants. During 2008-09 alone, Chennai shipped 146,000 cars to over 100 countries, making it the largest export hub for automobiles and auto components from India.
