KARACHI: Indiscreet firing at a restaurant in Gulshan-i-Iqbal neighbourhood killed two people and injured another in Karachi, DawnNews reported on Monday.
Unidentified miscreants attacked the restaurant in block 13-D of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, injuring three people.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital where two succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
The incident spread chaos in the locality and owners were forced to shut their shops and small businesses.

Police, FC deployed; possibility of operation in*Lyari

kARACHI: Heavy contingents of police and Frontier Constabulary (FC) were deployed in Lyari on Monday indicating start of “targeted operations” the IGP Sindh pointed out on Sunday, DawnNews reported.
There are reports of heavy contingents of FC officials reached at Eidgah, Kharadar and Risala police stations.
These officials will be deployed at entry and exit points of Lyari and adjoining business centres.
Earlier on Sunday, a news channel quoted the police chief as hinting at plans to launch targeted operations in some localities instead of a large-scale crackdown.
The police and Frontier Constabulary personnel had withdrawn from Lyari on Friday evening after failing to achieve desired results during the weeklong operation that had left at least 36 people, including five policemen, dead and over 150 others wounded.
Following the pull-out, Interior Minister Rehman Malik had told the media that the operation had been deferred for 48 hours only to be relaunched jointly by the police and Rangers.
But on Sunday, Sindh IGP Mushtaq Shah was quoted by a private TV channel as saying that the Lyari operation was not going to resume anytime soon. “An operation will not be carried out but targeted actions will be conducted in Lyari. The decision has been taken keeping in view the inconvenience caused to the residents during the operation.”
Meanwhile, CID police has arrested three suspects allegedly belonging to banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). According to police, they have recovered nine Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and several rounds of bullets from their possession.
Police has also claimed that the arrested were supplying ammunition to criminals fighting in Lyari.

Two people, including an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and a trader of the Marble Association, were targeted in different incidents on Monday evening.

The attacks were followed by demonstrations in Pak Colony, where traders protested over the murder of their colleague and vowed to keep their businesses closed in protest.Zafar, 45, was gunned down inside Marble Market near Bara Board, Pak Colony.

Law-enforcement officials rushed to the location after being informed of the incident, where they found Zafar lying injured on the road. He was immediately shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he died, said SHO Saleem Khan.

He was present at his shop when two motorcyclists appeared, shot him injured and fled, the SHO added.Police found five empty shells of a 9mm pistol from the scene of the crime.

Tension gripped the area after the attack, as traders closed their businesses and blocked all vehicular traffic in protest. Badar, Vice President of the Marble Association, while talking to The News, strongly condemned the murder of Zafar, who he said was also a member of their association. He revealed that Zafar had been continuously receiving threats from the extortion mafia, who, he believes, is responsible for the murder.

The vice-president also blamed the police for having failed to provide the necessary security to his association, whose office-bearers had met Inspector General (IG) of Police Sindh Mushtaq Shah and Addition IG Karachi Akhtar Hasan Khan Gorchani in this regard.

Badar also claimed that he had met Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) West Haseeb Baig and Superintendent Police (SP) Akram Abro, who had assured him that they would deploy 20 police personnel in the market for security.

“However, they only provided us with six policemen and now, because of their negligence, an extortionist has once again killed a senior member of our association.” He stated that the market would remain closed until the police assured them of full security and the killers were brought to justice.

In an unrelated attack, Zulfiqar alias Zulfi, an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), was gunned down by armed motorcyclists on Monday evening outside his residence in Absara Apartment, Jauharabad.

Police arrived at the spot shortly after and shifted Zulfiqar to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment, where he later expired. They also cordoned off the area to preserve evidence, where they recovered empty shells of a 30-bore pistol, said SHO Mohammad Rashid.

It was learnt that Zulfiqar was an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Unit-164 and resident of Absara Apartment, SHO Rashid added.After the incident, tension developed in the area as armed men resorted to aerial firing.

Meanwhile, three motorcyclists opened indiscriminate fire at the Meerath Kabab House in 13-D-II of Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The owner of the restaurant, Mohammad Ali Shahani, was injured, while his labourers, Babar Jahangir and Razamand, died in the shooting.

LONDON: A Lyari leader, who succeeded in escaping to London by dodging the Sindh Police, is set to protest Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani’s visit to the UK from the platform of “Friends of Lyari International.”

One of the most-wanted Lyari leaders on the dead or alive list, Habib Jan Baloch mysteriously managed to escape from the war-zone raising suspicions that he may have been assisted by senior level Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) members or by police forces in leaving the conflict-ridden shanty town.

Speaking to The News in London, Habib Jan Baloch, who along with Uzair Jan Baloch and Zafar Baloch is on the country’s most-wanted list, said he arrived in London on Sunday night after escaping Lyari via land, boat, camels, sea and in the end an aeroplane. He also called for the immediate resignation of Minister for Interior Rehman Malik.

Habib, who is no longer with the PPP but has served as a member of the Federal Council, refused to reveal who helped him escape from Lyari.

From the platform of Friends of Lyari International, Habib Jan Baloch will be protesting against Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilaniís visit. “I am no more with [the] PPP. We are speaking to [the] PML-N, PTI, JUI and others and may form our own wing after BB Shaheedís name.” Calling on Rehman Malik to step down, Habib Jan said: “The people of Lyari had saved Pakistan and all patriotic Pakistanis should support the people of Lyari.” He proceeded to add, “Rehman Malik wants to break Pakistan. Uzair Jan Baloch and other are standing up for Pakistan. I wanted to become a martyr facing the police oppression but the committee of our elders asked me to leave and raise the issue of Lyari at the international level.”

Habib Jan, who is considered to be a close associate and confidante of Dr Zulfikar Mirza having even organised his last UK visit, claimed that Lyari was under siege and had suffered from brutal shelling. He blamed Chaudhary Aslam as being responsible for the dozens of Lyari deaths, warning police officer of consequences for their actions.

Habib claimed that the Lyari operation was being carried out on the whims of one close relative of a top PPP leader who wanted to carve out his own space in politics by politicising the Lyari issue.

Lyari crackdown

For eight days, the police with all their might, and incompetence, unleashed an operation in Lyari, which failed to nab armed gangs, but succeeded in killing and terrorising the residents of the area. Lyari, the oldest residential locality of Karachi, has been the home of a large number of Baloch settlers for more than a century. These are hard-working, simple folks. Hasn’t the state failed in providing these original residents of Karachi subsidised education, health and vocational training facilities? It is also unfair to state that Lyari alone is the breeding ground for criminals. If the interior minister is to be believed that mobsters have stocked prohibited automatic weapons, rocket launchers and grenades in Lyari, then the question arises as to how did these weapons arrive here in the first place?

While it is the state which is responsible for allowing Karachi to become infested with weapons, it is primarily the PPP – which has always been voted from Lyari – that has to bear the responsibility for failing to deliver to the people of Lyari.

liyari people live in liyari and do not go to BALUCHISTAN!!!! for god sake understand that there are people who have lived in karachi for 2 or 3 generations! i am sure they are still in liyari and a deal between government and them has been done! No sir, operation was not ok because police is neither equipped nor trained for these operation. How can police or for that matter a fighting force can fight while standing on roads and their opponents are sitting comfortably in their houses and pill boxes. Did police ever asked for help from other agencies other than their sister force ie FC. Did they ask any support from IB? No. I think police needs to blame themselves ( decision makers)for ill planning. Police clearly under estimated strength of gangsters/ terrorists. If police ups desired to do this operation as solo then they should have asked a good input by IB and should have carried out intelligence based targeted operation and if their operation was halted due to intense resistance by gangsters, instead of making it an ego point they should have asked for rangers.
Principally I disagree from this type of operation in own population once you come under pressure due to presence of innocent people in area right from first bullet.
All respect and honor for fallen brave policemen who fought against all odds.
