Lockheed keen to boost India defence supply | Business | bdnews24.com

NEW DELHI, Feb 8 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Lockheed Martin Corp, the world's biggest aerospace company, is keen to supply India with defence equipment including fighters and ships, in deals Indian defence sources say are potentially worth $20 billion.

"We are looking to supply frigates, air defence systems, helicopters. There is a huge horizon to expand," Roger Rose, chief executive of Lockheed's Indian operations, said on Monday.

Several Indian defence officials said the various Lockheed deals under consideration could be worth at least $20 billion.

Lockheed was offering its Aegis naval air defence system to be fitted into seven ships that it hopes to supply to the Indian navy, Rose told Reuters in an interview.

The company is also bidding to supply 16 attack helicopters to the Indian Navy, Rose said.

"India is the first country outside the United States to be offered the MH-60R helicopters. It is a great submarine hunter and submarine killer," Rose said.

India is strengthening its naval presence to protect its maritime interest in the Indian Ocean and inducting dozens of new ships and fighter aircraft to counter other naval powers.

The U.S. company will also buy equipment worth $300 million from Indian firms for six C-130J military planes that it is manufacturing for India, he said.

Lockheed last year sold six military transport planes to India for about $1 billion, which analysts said was a sign of growing ties between New Delhi and Washington and the reversal of India's decades-old reliance on Soviet equipment.

"We are looking at all top Indian companies to source equipment for the C-130J planes, including HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited)," Rose said in New Delhi.

The contracts are being issued to comply with India's policy to manufacture 30 percent equipment locally on all defence deals with foreign companies, Rose said.

India is looking to spend more than $50 billion over the next five years to modernise its weapons systems after the 2008 Mumbai attacks revealed glaring loopholes in the security system.

New Delhi also began field trials last August to buy 126 fighter jets in a $10.4-billion deal to modernise the air force.

Lockheed's F-16 is competing with Boeing's F/A-18 Super Hornet, France's Dassault Rafale, Russia's MiG-35, Sweden's Saab JAS-39 Gripen and the Eurofighter Typhoon, produced by a consortium of European companies, for the contract, one of the biggest in play.

FMS = Foreign Military Sales.

These sales are between US and its friendly countries and are government to government sales.

thanks seems a good way of getting weapons bypass the long procumant process that is keeping us from getting equipmant we need in a quick way

Depends on what kind of equipment! As far as I understand it, there were not much equally good and light howitzers available, but if you have different choices, such a competition is perfect to reduce price, or get better additional deals (ToT, offsets...), see MMRCA.

thats a good point its just that like the case of the airbus refuelers we spent two years to pick it then its cancelled and we have to start allover again

That indeed is a problem, but not because of the competition, more because MoD seems not really to know what they want and you can see this in so many competitions (refueler, MMRCA, LUH, or the medium range maritime patrol aircraft competition, that was cancelled recently too).
And that's not only hurting our forces with several delays, but also the reputation of India! I live in Germany and am also active on german forums, that's why I know that this kind of aimless behavior, is viewed very negatively in western countries. Everybody knows that delays, cancellations and reissues of competition are normal in India and will need much patience, or won't taken seriously at all.

Always keep buying, never make something on your own.

even if India did make something, it will have at least 1 default.

now tell me, can Pakistan do a little damage to china in case of war?

:rofl::rofl:

Good Start but we need OUR OWN private firms to take this kind of defence need..............

There are many advantages of that

1) Great made in India Product

2) All that money is directly pumped back to the Indian Manufaturin,Matirial,I.T. and Labour sector.

3) Self reliant.

4) Compitition in our own firms to make them more efficiant and come up with better products.

5) Dont have to go for VARY VARY VARY VARY VARY long process time to get defence equipment.

6) Save Our hard earn money
and so on..................................................

Bottem line "MAKE OUR PRIVATE FIRMS TO PLAY "

Hello Sirji

I don't understand why there is a communication gap between MoD and Defense forces... when they are next door neighbor... We need to understand one thing is that MoD wants the equipment or defense force who is gonna use it... Is our defense head not capable to deciding what they need from the beginning...then why the tenders are being canceled... I Think we require these babus only for financing and diplomatic solution and not for military checking or quality analyzing..

There is always some caught under every defense deal... that the reason these people want to get involved and delay the projects for personal benefits
