Army officer in J&K shots himself up

Deepak Khajuria

Jammu, December 1, 2006

A Lieutenant Colonel of the Army committed suicide by shooting himself with his service weapon at Mahore in Udhampur, 180 km north of Jammu,Friday.

This is a first incident of its kind in which an army officer of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in Jammu and Kashmir has committed a suicide.

Though the suicide cases of the Army personnel and the paramilitary forces have been reported from time to time in the 17-years of militancy in the strife-torn state of Jammu and Kashmir. PRO Defence Jammu, Lt Col SD Goswami identified the deceased Army officer as Lt Col Pankaj Jha.

Goswami said that the officer who belonged to 15 Sector Rashtriya Riffles (RR) shot himself at his official residence at Mahore this afternoon around 1400 hours.

The PRO informed that the body of the deceased Army officer has been sent to the hospital for a postmortem report. The reason behind the suicide has not yet been traced.

A similar incident of suicide by a female 25-year-old Army Lieutenant Sushmita Chakraborthy of Bhopal occurred on June 16, 2006 when she shot herself at Udhampur, where she was posted in officer's mess of the 5071 Army Service Corps (ASC).

A postgraduate in Chemistry, Sushmita was reportedly not happy with her job.

Lower rank Army personnel and security forces mostly commit suicide after denial of leave applications. However, in case of the high rung officers the reasons were not found but reports suggest were not satisfied with their jobs.

The stress among the security personnel at times also became security problem at VIP places like on April 02, 2006. After apparently being denied leave, a CRPF soldier identified as Anand Kumar Singh opened indiscriminate fire on his colleagues at the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's official residence at Jammu, killing three. The dead included company commander and two head constables of CRPF. The accused soldier was later arrested.

Later on April 20, 2006, an Inspector, Chander Paul (40) of Bulandshaher in Uttar Pradesh of the Border Security Force (BSF) committed suicide by hanging himself in his room inside a training centre at Srinagar.

On January 25, 2006, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable Avtar Chand gunned down four of his colleagues injuring one critically inside a heavily guarded CRPF (96 Battalion) camp housed in Firdous Cinema in downtown Srinagar. After entering into a verbal brawl with one of his colleagues, Avtar reportedly went berserk and opened fire. He was later overpowered and arrested.

As stress in uniform has become an official truth, various security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir have now engaged counsellors and psychologists as stress buster for their officers and security personnel. Besides the use of meditation, body exercises and yoga are also experimented.

Recently in the month of November, Army in the state have been using Yoga tips of the 'Yog Guru Baba Ram Dev'. But the incidents of suicides are continuing unabated.

It is a problem, lets see how they intend to solve it other than yoga,Maybe shorter deployments could work

Each time this happens I wonder what dreadful orders they are giving their soldiers that lead their sub-conscience to make them commit suicide.

You are right. It’s never easy to shoot humans like stray dogs. Guilt always overcomes primitive savagery instincts.

Completly unwarranted Asim and tomcatt, Both of our countries have very proffessional and brave soldiers, Lets give them that respect. They are not some monstrous men who take pleasure killing, You are ready to take a bullet for your comrade, That level of mental strength is way beyond the comprehension of civvies like you and me, routine for them.

For all you know He must have shot himself cuz of some private reason or something, and I am not ruling out working stress also.Lets not get into quick conclusions on a matter we know nothing about.

Maybe we should discuss about Shorter Deployments, Rotation of Troops etc, Proffessionals think beyond emotional considerations.

Soldiers are supposed to follow orders. It's not THEM who we are calling "monstrous". They definitely don't take pleasure in killing thats why it may be a cause that they end up taking their own life.

We could assume personal problems but these are soldiers who are committing suicide. We have to assume its a soldering related problem.

Nobody said anything against the soldier. It's the guy who is giving them orders to shoot who is the problem.

Then what is the use of talking to Monsters for peace. Bunk all the peace talks.Having a different point of view is not monsterous. There unwanted incidents happenin over there but thats were the buck stops. We look at it the same view, you look at Bugti incident

PS: Why has Ray stopped posting here?
Do you remember a guy called JOSH in WAB, who got banned cuz he just couldnt stand Dalem's extreme unforgivin, unhumane, one sided views. I am him.

You're talking with the conviction of someone who's read the soldiers' suicide notes. Suicide rates as a percentage of the total strength of the IA is better than the US Army and the British Army.

Just so that we're clear, I was referring to the Indian government's monstrous orders to target Kashmiris. The soldier has to carry them out, whether he likes it or not.

Ray, Dalem and you are all welcome here. We in fact encourage heated debates here. As long as people be civilized about it and don't launch into insulting other members or name-calling.

Good examples and thats the reason I've come to that conclusion. The vets returning from Iraq, committing suicide or going into a state of depression, name one cause only. The things they are made to do in Iraq.

From Prisoner abuse to shooting an unarmed kid... A nice guy won't take it so well.

I guess we did talk, wasnt it about Imperial Suites in Dubai...lol...I am not even going to walk near that place again. I termed most problems in the Middle east was caused by the USA, and Bin Laden was infact creation of US or supported by the people created by US. I got kicked out of there for that.
