Gaddafi was also highly foolish not get build a stronger military.
Actually his military was not bad. He had tanks, a small but functioning air force and good loyal officers. Though the military was small. If you remember when given the order they had almost put down all these terrorists and only had to take over Benghazi which they could do in a week or so. But then NATO started bombing and sending in special forces from its ships into Libya under the cover of bombing who were equipping and training the terrorists as well bringing in more terrorists from outside Libya. The weakness in Libyan army was its air defense as well as having no anti-ship cruise missiles. Still they stood up well, for almost 7 months against NATO which is not a joke. If they had air defense and anti-ship cruise missiles, they could perhaps stand another year. But to remain victorious Qaddafi must have had ballistic missiles tipped nuclear weapons which could hit European cities. Without that capability of deterrence, to bring war into Europe, he was still vulnerable to a high degree. Without nuke tipped ballistic missiles, he was like a good boxer who was forbidden from hitting the opponent but was only allowed to deflect the hits of the opponent. He would have survived longer but eventually even a weak opponent with sustained hits would have downed him. The most important thing is the deterrence capability. And that only comes with nuke tipped ballistic missiles.
