Raytheon open to offering AESA radar for India's LCA

Paris, June 18 (PTI): The US defence major Raytheon is open to offering its sophisticated AESA radar capable of tracking targets in the air and on the ground for India's fighter jet fleet provided the US government approves such a move, a top official of the company has said.

The technology and its applications can be adapted for different platforms, including new aircraft like the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), and retrofitted on older aircraft like the Indian Air Force's existing fleet of jets, said Michael Henchey, director of business development for Raytheon's Tactical Airborne Systems.

"The technology is scalable and we could scale the electronic antenna of the AESA radar to put it in the LCA," Henchey told PTI here on the sidelines of the Paris Air Show.

He, however, made it clear that the transfer of such technology would depend totally on negotiations between the Indian and US governments as well as the level of the active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar technology that Washington would be willing to share with New Delhi.

"It would all depend on the country to country negotiations," he said, adding the US State Department and the Pentagon would have to give their approval for such a proposal.

Unlike conventional radars, AESA radars can track dozens of targets on the ground and transmit the information to ground stations and other aircraft to provide a near real time picture of the battlefield. They can also be used in an electronic warfare role. The AESA radar also forms a key part of the US's efforts to pitch the F-16 and F-18 combat jets for India's planned purchase of 126 fighters.

Henchey said the AESA radar had been fitted to the US Air Force's F-15s in 2000 and the US Navy's F/A-18s would be equipped with it by next year. "In December last year, US jets equipped with AESA radars made a map of an area and transmitted the file to the ground in less than a tenth of a second," he said.

Raytheon, he said, was also looking to partner Indian defence firms in view of New Delhi's 30 per cent offsets policy for all defence deals worth over Rs 300 crore. "We have already tied up with Tata Power and will announce some more partnerships with Indian firms later this year," said Henchey.

The news from Coimbatore, quite close to sulur, just 20Kms away... is that Tejas testing is one FAST mode. I forsee LCA coming before schedule.

NEW DELHI: India is set to initiate a major international competition to acquire new age radars for its indigenous combat planes in the coming weeks, the winner of which is likely to gain a strong foothold for future domestic projects.

The integration of an AESA radar was a key parameter for the Air Force to clear the order for 83 LCA Mk 1A fighters, after years of blocking the indigenous fighter on concerns that it would not be combat worthy.

Sources have told ET that an expression of interest for a new set of AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk 1A is set to be floated shortly, with top global aviation firms expected to participate. The government had recently cleared an order for 83 of the LCA Mk 1A jets.
The competition would be the largest international contract for AESA radars that are the heart of modern combat jets. These new radars give much more range and engagement potential to fighters, enabling them to engage targets from a distance without getting detected. AESA radars can track and direct weapons to multiple air and ground targets simultaneously.

With India working on an indigenous next generation plane under the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), it is likely that the winning company will have a much larger order book, with the potential number going upwards of 200.

The first Indian Air Force aircraft with AESA radars will be the Jaguar fighter that is being upgraded to the DARIN 3 version. The first Jaguar with the new radar is expected to fly in January. The contract to equip 58 Jaguars with AESA radars had gone to Israel’s ELTA, making it the frontrunner for the LCA Mk 1A project as well.

There could, however, also be surprise entries into the Indian competition from the US, with Raytheon, which manufactures the AESA radar for the F/A 18 Super Hornet and the F 16 also showing interest.

While in the past, US firms had limited options to offer to New Delhi, with India now gaining Major Defence Partner status, transfer of sensitive technology and licences have been made easier.

The AESA will give the LCA an edge over similar fighter operating in the region that are equipped with conventional radars.

The LCA project took a minor hit earlier this month when Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba announced that the naval version of the fighter is not suitable for aircraft carrier operations, necessitating an international competition for a new range of combat aircraft.

Forum rules donot allow change of original title, however the correct title should be LCA to get AESA radar.

you are already getting Israeli radars which are equal in capability to US radars, then what are you upto ? You want to fit 2 radars ?lol

they think its a MINOR HIT, HA HA, its a mega blunder bhai jan

LOL.

Tejas still not deployed in operational IAF squadrons?

Such a failure junk. A total humiliation for india--well a country where facing humiliation has been the norm throughout the history

As such repeated braying on all Indian threads is probably what keeps you from crossing the line and donning that vest, we take a sympathetic view of the forever condemned to be overzealous. Keep braying.

DO Indians know what a NEW RANGE OF COMBAT AIRCRAFT MEANS? it means another 33 years wasted

with all due apology my Indian friend its the HAL braying for last 33 years. If you can stop HAL, all others will automatically stop, I mean there is a limit to delays. Your Tejas are already obsolete before launching, its nothing more than a Mirage3

US does not give classified defence technology to ant country other than Israel. Not even NATO members are getting it. How India will get it beats me

I must admit that when Salala happened when Abbottabad happened and when AQ Khan happened and so much and so forth Pakistan accepted its fate as laughing stock in front of the world.

I accept those were embarrassing moments in our history but I dont understand how they are related to this particular topic.

Its an Indian plane. We are not selling it to you. If anything if we induct what you consider a sub-standard system (yet all specs show it is wayyyyyy better than your chinese import) then you should be happy. But at every Tejas mention Pakistani trolls lose their already fragile mental balance and start regurgitating their childhood upbringing.

yes we are operating mirages since last 45 years
