The membership of 60 Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) members was suspended for not responding to a strike call by the Pakistan Bar Council and the Islamabad Bar Council, it emerged on Saturday.

As lawyers in the capital observed a nationwide strike on Friday, the ICHBA had also decided to boycott an oath-taking ceremony for new judges at the high court over the IHC chief justice's decision to suspend the practising licence of IHCBA Secretary Umair Baloch.

A letter written by the joint secretary of the IHCBA, Advocate Waqar Ahmed Gondal, to the IBC vice chairman Haroon Rashid stated: "Despite strike notice issued by the Pakistan Bar Council as well as Islamabad Bar Council, the following lawyers have disobeyed the directions issued by your good office, therefore, their membership of Islamabad High Court Bar Association is suspended forthwith.

"[...] And this reference is forwarded for necessary disciplinary action, as your good self has already announced [an] order of the suspension of their respective licenses to practice for one month," the letter added, in an apparent reference to a speech by Rashid in which he said that the licences of the lawyers who did not observe the strike would be suspended.

On Friday, lawyers across the country, on the call of legal bodies, boycotted courts to protest against the registration of cases against those lawyers who were arrested for their involvement in the rampage at Lahore's Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) earlier this week.

The lawyers were responding to a strike call by the PBC. A notification issued by the PBC had said the protest was "against partial and biased conduct of the local police and the administration of Lahore against the lawyers as well as action taken by the Islamabad High Court against the secretary general, Islamabad High Court Bar Association".

On Thursday, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah had decided to suspend Baloch's practising licence while the high court also issued a show-cause notice to him for "professional misconduct and contempt".

He was reported to have been forcing lawyers not to appear before judges as the IHCBA was observing a strike against alleged offences against the legal fraternity in Lahore on Wednesday.

Some lawyers had suggested disrupting Friday's oath-taking ceremony but IHCBA President Raja Inam Ameen Minhas rejected the proposal.

He said the bar association would neither obstruct the ceremony nor stage any protest on roads. He, however, said it was the right of the lawyers to express their reservations, for which bar rooms were the appropriate forum.

Later, lawyers assembled in the bar room where PBC vice chairman Syed Amjad Shah, Rashid and the IHCBA president criticised the suspension of Baloch's licence. They also planned to assemble when Baloch appears in court to respond to the show-cause notice on December 19.
Pehlay chori phir seena zoori.... kuttay ke bachay need to be hanged in public. They are protesting that cases should not filed against people who burnt a hospital and killed patients? What sort of banana republic this is?

Send all cases to military courts no mercy and make an example for others
Otherwise pak is screwed first mulvi and lawyers and next ... everyone would take law in hand

Prime Minister Imran Khan and Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar on Wednesday took notice of an attack by lawyers on the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) in Lahore.

Punjab Chief Minister ought to order SWAT teams to go in fully armed with rubber bullets and start shooting these ghunday, jahil, kanjars who call themselves lawyers. Impose a full legislative action, in coordination with the law enforcement agencies and make an example of them. Let the nation know, that NO ONE is above the law. If you break the law, the law will break your bones.

Can somebody take notice of how many notices this useless Buzdar has taken to date?

This is pathetic by Khan to keep this lulloo as CM for so long. One should accept his mistake and rectify it, rather than stubbornly sticking by it. This lulloo can't run a paan ka khoka and here he has been given chief ministership of largest province.

Lawyers must seek public apology over PIC attack: LHC

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) chief justice was requested on Friday to form a division bench to hear a petition seeking the release of arrested lawyers.

Initially, Justice Anwarul Haq Punhun heard the petition and forwarded the matter to LHC Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan to form a division bench.

Later, a two-member bench, headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najfi, took up the petition seeking cancellation of FIRs registered against lawyers and their immediate release. The court directed provincial law officer to furnish record of cases and details of arrested lawyers by Dec 16.

Member Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Azam Nazir Tarar appeared on behalf of lawyers. Justice Najfi observed that it seemed law of jungle is prevailing in the country, as lawyers attacked the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC), adding that no society could exist long under law of jungle.

The court asked petitioners’ lawyer as to how lawyers dared storm a hospital? “What would be your reaction if such invasion of bar council’s office takes place? It had not happened even in war times. Black sheep are present among lawyers and they should be kicked out, the judge remarked.

PBC member Tarar said the entire lawyer community felt regret over the PIC incident. Justice Najfi asked him could you render a single justification of attack on a hospital, adding that the lawyers should seek public apology and correct their ranks. He said the court was hearing the case with heavy heart and pain.

Tarar said lawyer leadership condemned the incident soon after it happened. Justice Anwarul Haq Punhun, the other member of the bench, asked whether any bar council had shown willingness to take action against the delinquent lawyers.

To this, Tarar said the bar council was going to take action against them and their practice licences would be suspended. He pointed out that police had tortured lawyers as if they had come to wage a war with an enemy country. They had been handed over to the CIA for further torture, adding that such practice should be shunned. Normally the real culprits are not arrested.

However, Justice Najfi angrily said apparently lawyers were aggressor, adding the arrested lawyers would have to seek bail from the trial court. He said the judges had taken oath to do justice in accordance with the Constitution and law of the land. The court adjourned hearing till Dec 16 and sought details of cases.
