Latest Russian nuclear submarine enters service

Russia has inaugurated a new nuclear-powered submarine capable of carrying Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs).

On Thursday, the Yuri Dolgoruky that is the first of a new series of Borei class nuclear-powered submarines entered service. It is capable of carrying 16 ICBMs of a new type called the Bulava.

The 170-meter (558-foot) submarine is designed to replace older ships. Sea trials are also being conducted on another submarine of the same type.

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the achievement during a conference call and described the submarine as a “powerful weapon that will guarantee our security.”

“Submarines of that class will become an important element of sea-based strategic forces, a guarantor of global balance and security of Russia and its allies,” Putin stated.

The Russian president also announced that Moscow plans to spend four trillion rubles (about $132 billion) on commissioning the new submarines along with other navy vessels.

Putin added that the upgrading of the navy is “one of the most important priorities in our work to strengthen the armed forces.”

He further highlighted that Russia had decided to construct eight more Borei-class ICBM nuclear submarines as well as eight smaller Yasen type submarines that are also nuclear-powered.
