ISLAMABAD: In a major development, the federal government jacked up the price of petroleum products by up to Rs12.03, a notification from the Finance Division said Tuesday.

The new rates will be effective from February 16 and will be revised at the end of the month.

Citing the reason for the increase in the petrol rates, which have for the first time in history moved past Rs150 per litre, the Finance Division said: "The prices of petroleum products are showing [a] drastic increase in the international market and presently are at the highest level since 2014."

The statement said despite the increase in prices since the beginning of the year, Prime Minister Imran Khan had deferred the last review of petroleum products' prices on January 31 to provide utmost "relief to the consumers".

The government levied zero per cent sales tax and reduced petroleum levy rate against the budgeted targets, the Finance Division said.

As a result, the government is bearing "a revenue loss of around Rs35 billion (fortnightly) on account of budgeted to existing PL and ST rates".

In the light of the losses, the prime minister has considered the recommendation to increase the prices of petroleum products, the statement said.

With a petroleum levy of Rs. 18 and 10% customs duty, the government is currently collecting tax on petrol at Rs. 29 per liter.

I think under current economic conditions they need to cut these taxes to help people.

Govt cannot afford to subsidise fuel, it's too expensive, but it can afford to cut this tax right down to zero. I know it will take a hit on revenue, but it will reduce inflation.

Joke apart, I support government to collect tax on petroleum products till Rs. 30 per liter regardless of price. If the product price is Rs. 30 government should charge Rs. 30 as tax, If the product price is Rs. 130 government should charge Rs. 30 as tax at that time too. No government can be run without taxes.

RS 160 IN PAKISTAN, so cheap, only 0.9$ per liter, the 31st cheapest country in the word

China at 1.2$ per liter now
india at 100 rs per liter,1.3$

The price of crude oil is the same all over the world.

It shows that the Pakistani government is transferring debt, transferring the debt of the people to the government, and a large part of the global oil price is tax.

i am in Sydney these days .. petrol is 180c per litter..= 226 PK per litter...

real solution lies in mass public transport infrusture... i personally dont believe petrol should be cheap... it should be more expensive... that would force the gov to improve public transport
