当天出事船只为印度籍钻井船Sagar Bhushan号，隶属于印度石油天然气公司（ONGC），建于1987年，总吨位约1.1万吨。
大约在13日上午9点15分左右，船体内部突然发生爆炸。就在爆炸发生前不久，有人报告称在船内一个交流室附近发生气体泄漏。
爆炸发生后，消防与急救迅速抵达现场。当时有12名工人被立刻送往医院，其中5人伤重不治，另有1人为全身45%烧伤。事后查明，这些工人在爆炸发生前正在船底部水箱进行切割和焊接作业。
一名幸存者回忆，爆炸发生前所有人都在水箱内进行焊接。突然发生爆炸，把所有人都困在水箱内，有一些意识还清楚的工人之后奋力在水箱一侧开了一个口子，这才得以逃生。
科钦船厂方面称，该船于2017年12月7日抵达船厂，今年1月12日进干船坞。原定2月28日出坞，4月7日完成维修。

有知情的管理人员表示，事发的周二是假日，所以只有很少的人留在船厂。不然作业的人数会更多，会酿成更大的惨剧。船厂方面还对媒体表示，爆炸只是发生在“局部”，并未对船只造成重大破坏。
印度造船国务部长在第二天视察事故现场，中央政府和船厂方面分别组建了事故调察组，对爆炸发生原因和可能存在的管理责任进行调查。

Not sure if you are trolling, but the news is, the explosion was caused during welding following a leak in acetylene tank.
