NEW DELHI: A special CBI court in Ranchi on Monday convicted former Bihar chief minister and RJD president Lalu Prasad in a case related to fodder scam.

The quantum of sentence in the case will be announced on October 3.

Lalu faces immediate disqualification as a Lok Sabha member as a recent Supreme Court order said that an MP or MLA would stand disqualified immediately if convicted by a court for crimes with punishment of two years or more.

The case, RC 20 A /96, involves Lalu Prasad, another former Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra, JD (U) MP Jagdish Sharma and 41 others, including four retired IAS officer and a former Income-Tax commissioner.

In this case, the accused have been held guilty of fraudulent withdrawal to the tune of Rs 37.7 crore from Chaibasa treasury in the 1990s. Chaibasa was then part of undivided Bihar.

All the other accused including another former chief minister of Bihar, Jagannath Mishra, have been convicted in the case.

Excellent news for the country.

Guys such as him should be necked out from the country.

The only sad part i see here is the time taken for the verdict to come out. Laloo is already a spent force and i don't think he is even relevant in Bihar or national politics anymore. But the truth has prevailed finally and that itself should be a reason to rejoice.

He is not a spent force.. Not by a long margin... In last election his party got 20% votes... BJP-JD (U) together routed him out.

Good decision but too late. Although the decision from SC makes him ineligible for election.

The first thing that struck me when I saw the visuals of him being escorted from the court premises, was the posse of NSG commandoes guarding him. That is a travesty of our internal security, that an elite force raised at great expense is being misutilized like this. It is high time that state police forces took over that role, and the NSG returned to its intended mandate.

On topic, the complete immunity with which this loot of the taxpayers happened for decades is shocking, and exemplifies all that was wrong with governance in the country, back in those days. It wasn't simply a minister or two, or a few corrupt politicians - the entire state machinery, and dubious businesspersons were all in it together. Dozens of politicians (from every political party present there), hundreds or thousands of bureaucrats and civil servants, and thousands of local businesspeople worked hand in glove to create false documents for fictitious purchases of fodder for non existent cattle. Since everybody got a share of govt money, they happily kept doing so for decades, with increasing scope.

Hopefully everybody who profited at the nation's expense will rot in jail and be made to pay for their crimes. That will instill fear in the hearts of civil servants, and teach the next generation that crime doesn't pay. The BIMARU states were bimaru for a reason. Hopefully society will change and becomes less crooked as time goes by.

Oh well.. this is why you say there is no permanent friends or foes in politics. Now that Nitish is Congress's blue eyed boy... Lalu's loss wont make such a difference. This whole ordinance fiasco proves that.

Coming back to the verdict.... my faith in Indian judicial system has increased a notch!

I was looking to hear from you as you probably have the best view of mood of electorate in Bihar amongst us. That said what is your assesment of Nitish's chances and any anti-incumbency wave. Bihar is too important a state for any alliance looking to form government in next Lok Sabha & under the circumstances, Laloo's conviction will change the political equations significantly & therefore i believe Laloo may not be as dominant a force, as he has been over the years.
