Lahore to get its own 'Disneyland'

A nice article
Does Lahore really need its own Disneyland?

Lahore will have its own ‘Disneyland– a recent news item that does not carry significance as far as headlines are concerned, but does carry a ton of significance otherwise.
As things stand currently, only a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Punjab government and the Chinese company. While a MoU has no legal value, it does point a finger towards Shahbaz Sharif’s priorities.

Coming from an industrialist background, his focus towards capitalism is unquestionable. From investing in infrastructure to handing out laptops, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government is a big proponent of liberal economic policies, despite being a conservative party otherwise.

But where does all this investment in infrastructure leave the working class of Punjab?

Southern Punjab has one of the worst poverty levels in the country. According to a survey by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) published last year, the city of Rajanpur, for example, has a staggering 44 per cent households living below the poverty line. The people living below the line in other southern districts respectively comprise 40 per cent in Muzaffargarh, 36 per cent in DG Khan, 33 per cent in Bahawalpur, 31 per cent in Layyah and Lodhran, 31 per cent in Pakpattan, and 28 per cent in Multan, Khanewal and Bhakkar districts.

These are figures that stand out in the ugliest of manners. What is even more alarming is the fact that these numbers conceal the reality that large numbers of people hover just above the poverty line and are in constant danger of destitution.

But this is not the end of it.

Dozens of factory workers lost their lives in Sundar Industrial Estate and Burki Hudiara this month. This on top of the other cases of injuries and deaths in industrial facilities that are shoved under the carpet, portray an extremely grim picture for the strongest provincial government in the country. It is a reminder of how Shahbaz and the PML-N’s provincial machinery is custom built to suit the ruling elite and big business as the working class suffers one breakdown after the other.

Wouldn’t it be good if Shahbaz directs the abundance of funds at his disposal towards social services that make a material change in the lives of people?

Instead of investing in Disneyland, why not invest in social housing?

Instead of investing in roads, why not invest in education that is not only financially accessible to the poor but is also of the highest quality?

Instead of investing in transit, why not invest in providing employment that does not depend on temporary terms?

Instead of investing in tons of other infrastructural gimmicks, why not invest in high-quality health services?

Instead of pleasing the ruling elite and his fellow capitalist cronies, why not do something for people who go through every day not knowing if they will have food and shelter the next day?

Instead of doing something for the one per cent, why not do something for the 99 per cent?

Because infrastructural gimmicks work from a vote-hunting perspective, and social services that elevate the poverty stricken class do not. The proposed investment in Lahore’s Disneyland or its equivalent further strengthens Shahbaz’s capitalist leaning. But this is not the first time he is doing this, and this is not the last time either. Not only is he ruining Lahore’s aesthetic value courtesy of these infrastructural flings, he is alienating the working class of the city, and more specifically the rest of Punjab, in the worst possible manner.

Perhaps Shahbaz needs to take a stroll down to the slums in Punjab and ask people if investing in Lahore’s Disneyland will make their lives better. The answer might surprise him.

An agreement for the construction of a theme park and aquarium with facilities matching that of Disneyland has been signed between the Punjab government and a Chinese company.

The park will be built at a cost of Rs36 billion in one-and-a-half years, according to a handout issued by the Chinese company Golden Bean Group.

Lahore Commissioner Abdullah Sumbal along with Punjab Horticulture Authority director-general Mian Muhammad Shakeel and Chinese company chairman Jin Ming Nan signed the agreement in Lahore on Thursday.

Price hike puts popular US Disneyland annual pass over $1,000

Further, the handout said along with other national and international companies, the Golden Bean Group will also participate in the bidding for the construction of Sundar Workers Welfare Complex Phase-I. Under the project of the Punjab Labour Department worth Rs7.78 billion, 2,900 apartments would be built for industrial workers and labourers.

Labour secretary Ali Sarfraz and Chinese company chairman Jin Ming Nan signed the MoU in this regard.
So an educated child is not a priority but expensive rides for funding American Disney (would be foolish he who thinks we benefit from a foreign franchise) is more important? Yup priorities are right for the blind elite!

No money for health care none for education but plenty to make friends rich :agree:

SS will ensure
you mean like nandipur? metro for flooding and chipping off? Yea I am sure he will blame the builder after paying the builder more than the predicted money :agree:

it will pay for itself in a few years.
You do know foreign franchise are the only ones that benefit?

And whose providing the security? SS from his personal security or another kharcha so his grandkids can be happy?

. This is just an investment
for whom? Those who cant even pay for their electrical bills or those who sit in mahal and dont experience a min of loadshedding?

don't know the difference between a million and a billion are crying over it.
And priorities and responsibilities are somethings we have been reminding SS over and over!

it does point a finger towards Shahbaz Sharif’s priorities.
the working class of Punjab?
are they even considered human? What about the lower class what are they considered?
Southern Punjab has one of the worst poverty levels in the country.
But disney land is more important :agree:

1 is because of :

infrastructural gimmicks work from a vote-hunting perspective, and social services that elevate the poverty stricken class do not.
2ndly SS is not updated regarding what it means to be progressive and advanced...In countries in West, Advancement is seen from people satisfaction not from large roads and fashionable metro stands!

.
I think our primary concern should be to help the poor and provide education and schooling to our entire population. Theme Parks and Metro buses can wait. They benefit only a small section of society. I don't see all this as positive. What about the 20% of our population that suffers from complete penury and deprivation. In urban centers we have a problem with electricity in rural areas 12-16 hours they don't have electricity. So how about we start caring for the poor, oppressed and weak in our country. It is also said we have one of the highest out of school population. We are focused on all the wrong things.

:o:

OMG! Why would the author question democracy? :o:

we start caring for the poor, oppressed and weak in our country.
How do you expect that to happen? We dont have a single representative in parliament who has either seen poverty like not having a home! Nor have they ever been oppressed, no one can ever scare them coz both police and courts guard them at our expense
....I mean they get pre bail facilities before even being summoned and actually manage to get some BS orders to be above the law. They also get VIP jails...so nope they have never known weakness!

> According to the agreement Golden Bean Group (GBG) will establish and operate a world class amusement park in Lahore comprising of a theme park, five star hotel, shopping centre, water park, business centre, aquariums, roller coasters and indoor/outdoor rides. Government of the Punjab, PBIT and PHA will provide respective support and facilitation to the Golden Bean Group with regard to its efforts in establishment of the project.

> It was also agreed that Punjab Board of Investment and Trade will provide facilitation to Golden Bean pertaining to land buying, business to business meetings and in declaring the acquired piece of land for Them Park as Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

What exactly is the problem? It's not govt money so why do people give a damn?

.
land buying
we all see how this happens!
theme park, five star hotel, shopping centre, water park, business centre, aquariums, roller coasters and indoor/outdoor rides
how much % of our population benefits?

why do people give a damn?
The BIGGEST complain which amazingly you fail to see is the obvious uselessness of this plan for People of Pakistan (I said people not elite)

Why waste time, effort in things which are not beneficial for the common man? HOW is this benefiting a common laborer who doesnt even earn enough to pay electricity bills which he gets for electricity he never gets?

We dont ALWAYS think that...BUT somehow funds do disappear and we are told the result is the investment needed advertisement, need land which they bought "secured"
Somehow people are displaced
Somehow more money disappears or contractors dont finish the work ...

INVESTMENT means they want returns meaning its not benefiting PAKISTAN!

they will get returns for sure... Chinese are smart... May be it's just another Built operate transfer....

.
Built operate transfer
Build is always questionable - getting land is not easy in a place like Pakistan where people get linked with their land due to inheritance and other emotional sentiments!
Then the contracts - we have seen 1 too many things being made of tissue paper and joined with spit (thook say jori wi)

Then we have the material used.... :tsk: Disaster!

The problem lies in operate- we all know how management works in Pakistan...basically doesnt work as it is none existent!

Transfer always means trouble with rich getting monopoly again not good for our people!

There is no need to criticize just for sake of criticizing. I don't think any investor is idiot enough to invest his/her wealth in building school for common Pakistani, nor he/she is going to build amusement park in small cities and towns. They are their to earn profits, so they will invest in projects and places where they find it profitable.

Yes, but building schools is supposed to be govt job that is what tax is supposed to be used for! But govt is busy advertising for investors, walking behind investors, visiting them for coffee, doing everything but building the schools they are are supposed to! Despite walking behind, many meetings...we still get half chewed product?

.
Only 0.02 percent of Pakistani pay income taxes...can you criticize the development projects you don't even qualifie for good criticism

pakistan is far far far behind comparison with any devolved country..

Peoples entertainment must be at the top for any government and PMLN working on all fronts from energy transport security infurstature entertainment ....

sore loosers cry ....and never accept their defeat....when motorway was introduced some loosers cried river and some say they are still crying.....

Yes, Govt. should be criticized for not doing enough in education and health sector, but it's also stupid to expect that she should stop all other work and focus on one thing. Economy is as much important as education and health is. We are not rich country and are barely recovering from worst time, All investors should be welcomed doesn't matter in what kind of business (legal) they are going to invest instead of pulling the guns just because you don't like the person who is CM/PM of country.
