ISLAMABAD: Pakistan police suspect local terrorists were likely responsible for an attack on a visiting Sri Lankan team that killed eight people in Lahore on Tuesday, said an investigator on Friday as Punjab Police chief Khaled Farooq told AFP that an interim report on the attack will be wrapped up within 24 hours – after authorities claimed the perpetrators have been identified.

Right track: Salahuddin Niazi, the officer in charge of the probe, refused to confirm or deny if local terrorists were involved, saying only police were “on the right track ... we are progressing well and will release our findings very soon, but at the moment any comment or disclosure would jeopardise our efforts”.

Foreign involvement: However, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik said on Friday that he could not rule out foreign involvement in the attack.

“I cannot rule out (involvement of a) foreign hand in the incident,” Rehman told reporters in Lahore.

Asked if Sri Lanka’s Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam could be linked to the attack, he said, “We are keeping this aspect in mind.”

Rehman’s comments appeared to contradict remarks widely attributed to him on Thursday, denying any foreign involvement in the attack. “We have not found any leads suggesting the involvement of any religious elements,” he said, but refused to divulge information about how the probe was progressing.

Interim report: Meanwhile on Friday, the Punjab police chief said, “A little more time is required to complete the investigation ... we hope to complete the investigation by evening or tomorrow morning.”

Police have already released sketches of four suspects and have brought in around two dozen people for questioning over the attack, but no leads have been announced despite press speculation that home-terrorists were responsible.

“We have identified the people who did the operation,” provincial governor Salman Taseer told reporters in Lahore late on Thursday.

Up to 12 men attacked the convoy of officials, coaches and players, firing automatic weapons, grenades and a rocket launcher as the vehicles approached Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday. All the attackers fled without trace. agencies

Lashkar denies role in cricket attack

SRINAGAR: Lashkar-e-Tayyaba (LT) rejected on Friday media reports that it was involved in an attack on a visiting Sri Lanka cricket squad in Lahore. “These media reports are false ... and baseless,” said LT spokesman Abdullah Ghaznavi. “The attack on Sri Lanka’s team was an attack on Pakistan’s sovereignty and Kashmiris could never even think of that,” said Ghaznavi. “The attack is the handiwork of Indian agencies to defame Pakistan and bring instability to the country,” said Ghaznavi. afp

^ Yes its obvious Lashkar-e-Taiba isn't involved. Just a few weeks ago Taliban threatened to fight Lashkar-e-Taiba if it didnt help them fight Pakistani troops. Lashkar-e-Taiba said they could never fight fellow Pakistanis.

With all due respect sir may i add that people like you who see all the fault within and to them India is just like a saint which could never ever think of doing any damage to Pakistan and its existence or its interests, are not doing any good either to Pakistan. You may want to call us a taliban lover and what not, may i remind you again of who caused us more(taliban or India)? Moreover if indeed like you portray India being such a saint all the time with producing articles over and over, then why do we need an army of over 600000 men backed by an airforce and a navy and most notably nuclear assets. Somewhere i think there are still sane heads left in Pakistan otherwise if it would have been for people like you, then may i add with all due respect, that taliban threat is much smaller compared to what the consequences of negligence and ignorance be.
Sorry if post may offend you, but something i had to say, because you keep accusing us of being taliban lover, its about time you see yourself in the mirror first because you are defending a country that resulted in the loss of an entire wing. I hope that wasn't before your time.

I am not in the least offended by your post, I accept differing views. I do however, feel dismayed at the way your have interpreted what I wrote.

I am amazed that my lament” Pakistan is on the brink of collapse and responsibility lies with us” is understood to mean that India is a “Saint”. I have neither referred to India no do I care a whole lot as to what happens there. In one of my earlier post I have said “RAW may have financed it, but the way it was carried out suggest some criminal elements of the sectarian organizations”. Kindly point out when and where have I ever portrayed India as a Saint.

Today I read that a Police van was blown up in Peshawar. Also that Sufi poet Rehman Baba’s Tomb has been attacked just because women go there. These are Taliban for you.

I request you to kindly spare a thought for 7 Policemen and the wayfarer killed today in Peshawar bomb blast today and stop rising to the defense of the butchers who exploit Islam for indiscriminate killing; each time people like me criticize their actions. Regret to say that your riposte to my post clearly displays what ails our society, a lack of rational thinking and reading something totally different from what is actually written.
