Kraison sets 10-year target to make Royal Thai Navy best in Asean

In SEA, Singapore has the most advance navy while Indonesian navy has the largest navy. The Royal Thai Navy has an aircraft carrier and Vietnam has most likely the experience in combat in SEA region. Brunei has sufficiently navy to defend itself as it is not a big country and Myanmar and Malaysian navies are sufficiently equipped. Cambodia is smack between Vietnam and Thailand thus it cannot have a large navy while Laos is a land-locked country connected by river.

The only ill-equipped navy at the moment is the Philippines due to years of corruption.

The Myanmar navy isn't in competition with ASEAN navies - its only mission is supremacy over Bangladesh. We're on the Bay of Bengal side without a Pacific outlet. In hindsight I wish we kept some of our Gulf of Thailand facing territory from the imperial days. :(

I think the true naval power of Asean is Vietnam. In 10 years, China will find her southern neighbor very formidable, much like Japan in 1895.

Vietnam has a growing sub force, indeed. They have an impressive, bristling coastal defense system that can threaten any naval force, and have an impressive air defense system. Any general conflict with the Viet Namese would result in losses to any offending power. Afterall, they humbled two super powers in their day.

And even when the Japanese Empire invaded French Indochina, the Vietnamese and French were a force to be reckoned with. They did not collapse as easily as Singapore, Malaya and the Dutch East Indies --- as seen during Operation Ten Goh, Malaya Campaign. In fact, Vietnamese guerrillas were a problem for the Imperial Army, despite the fact that we decimated both French and their Vietnamese Guarde Civile at every uprising.

I would say that Indonesia, by far, has a larger naval force. And they're quickly developing / acquiring state of the art inventory. Indonesia can muster as well as survive a long war. Whereas nations like Singapore, Malaysia, tho they have state of the art equipment, would collapse in a protracted conflict.

Indonesia Navy is the largest in terms of vessels (especially in terms of surface combatant vessels) inventory, AShM missile inventory, Naval Aviation, and total personnel and Marine forces but so far the most under equipped Naval Forces in the world if you comparing them vis a vis with the total area they must guarding. Itself lacks in modern AAW Frigate and destroyer, maritime and air search radar coverage with humongous blankspot in Eastern provinces of Indonesia, and lacking in number of Submarine forces.

in short we are fucked numerous times

You're right, Ms. @madokafc that there are some areas where the Indonesian Navy has to improve upon, but I am confident that Indonesia will address these as they move long. Why i like Indonesia is because she is a democracy, as well as has the man power and natural resources to become a Great Power.

The Philippines only has one direction to go, and that's up. I think Philippines should coordinate more and participate more with its big brother to the south, Indonesia. For the longest time, Philippines has been quite insular, focusing on only internal affairs. Philippines is lucky that it shares a cultural heritage with Indonesia, and that is the Malay-Polynesian culture and language. Why afterall, Philippines-Malaysia-Brunei-Indonesia all belong to the Malay Archipelago... ;)

The Royal Thai Navy is centered on a surface-oriented matrix. It is centered on the Knox Class frigate, the Type 025 and Type 053 Frigates. In support are smaller corvettes. They have a very modest "fleet". Their weakness is their relatively non-existent anti-submarine warfare capability, rendering them susceptible to submarine threats. Their light carrier rarely ventures out to port, as it would be a target for most hostile navies, given its lack of defensive platforms.

I would recommend the Thai Navy acquire submarines, and diversify its anti-submarine capabilities. I would say that Singapore carries a more qualitative punch. And I would also say that Indonesia, by far, is the largest naval force in Southeast Asia.

The Thai Navy is not the only well fed koi in that pond. Do not forget the Indonesian Navy, the Singaporean Navy and to an extent, the Malaysian and Vietnamese Navies.

I agree with Nihonji. I think singapore Navy will come on top of the best navy in ASEAN. Indonesia too is a contender due to its size which is the largest. Thailand, Vietnam, and malaysia aren't too far behind though. But for me i will say Singapore comes on top.

The future Vietnamese navy will become our good practice targets. If they can last more than 3 days, then they will indeed be "formidable".

and in our eyes only your mouth is formidable.

Vietnam Navy now is only in the early stage of modernization. We will become a major player in ASEAN in about next 10 years.
Currently, Singapore Navy is the most modern force. But it's just a city-state with limited resources.
Indonesia is and will be the largest naval force in ASEAN. Following will be Viet Nam, Thailand, Malaysia...

It is not in 1979, before attacking Vietnam, the chinese also claimed they would have breakfast in Hanoi, have lunch in Hue city and have dinner in HCMC (perhaps they wanted to say in 1 day)?
But the result?
They had to spend a month struggling to deal with the Vietnamese militias near the border, then they fled quickly with their bloody nose before facing Vietnamese regular force who returned from Laos and Cambodia.
Note, in the same time, Vietnam needed about 20 days to free Phnom Penh from the Khmer Rouge...

The Thai navy will not get any further as long the corruption and personal cult is not dealth with beforehand.

To much money flows into the wrong hands, too much is wasted for bragging with toys that have no point and just waste money, too much wasted on formalities. There's no united goal. Just many greedy hands.
