Both Japan and China were the aggressors in these incidents.

1. Japan was the aggressor in China (Japan invaded the country)
2. China was the aggressor in Vietnam (China invaded Vietnam in 1979)

That's what he meant to say. He is right. Tho the main difference is that Japan stayed in China from 1931 till 1945 (14 year of war). Tho China only stayed for 6 months.

The Chinese were more "benevolent" i suppose than the Japanese who were very brutal and ruthless in prosecution of the war. To civilians and military people. This was unfortunate.

Yes, you're right. At the same time the PLA at the time was also trained to adhere to the Geneva convention in regards to the rules of war. Japan, during WWII, was not constrained by any Geneva Convention. It was truly unfortunate and a gravitas ! A shameful event for Japan.

What the South Koreans did in the Vietnam war is worse than what the PLA did, heck that Viet doesn't dare to mention the Japanese were responsible for > 1-2 mln Vietnamese casualties in WW2. The only thing he likes to repeat is the little naval skirmish of how Chinese killed a dozen of Viet thieves.
