Hulagu Khan (a non-Muslim) killed the last Abbasid Khalifa Al-Mustasim mercilessly in 1242 by making the horse hoofs pounding on his body wrapped in a carpet. yes i read it in an urdu book. 20 million muslims were killed in bagdhad. it was such a big city. but the invaders then became the cause of strength of ummah. most of them converted later.
but again amir taimor a mongol did even more worse to muslims. he fought the muslims of spain. this defeat weakened muslims in euorope.

halaku khan never wanted to attack baghdad. he was afraid of God wrath if he fought the caliph but then later he was persuaded by some traitor minister.
the minister told him that "if God wrath didn't come after the death of hussain and Ali then it won't come now on killing of non ahle bayt".
in this attack on baghdad. the invaders halaku khan forces were defeated in first battle. the prime minister of caliph was a shia. even at that time muslims were fighting each other in the streets of baghdad over sunni shia issue. the caliph son was leading sunnis.
any way you would be surprised to know that at this time halaku was also a shia muslim. the prime minister at the crucial time dismissed half the army of baghdad calling it a burden on economy.
caliph was asked to come with him to halaku khan to seek his merci. halaku khan killed every one in the city. he killed the caliph and spared the minister.

this story is authentic. many won't believe it but it happened.
