A video production studio was on Saturday burned down in Kerala’s Kannur district allegedly by an unidentified group after its owner’s comments against the use of purdah by Muslim women in public places. The studio was set on fire after vandalizing the equipment and furniture, the police said.
In a WhatsApp group ‘What Is Islam’, P Rafeeque, who runs the studio in Taliparamba area of Kannur district, had recently said that covering of face with purdah in public should be avoided as it was used by many to hide immoral activities.
He claimed that his comments were widely shared in the Muslim community in Kerala and the Gulf.
“Many advocated for boycotting my studio and asked the community members not to assign me any work. Two days back, I got threatening internet calls. I had feared attack, but did not expect to happen so promptly,’’ said Rafeeque.
He said he could not single out any organisation as every Muslim outfit has hardcore conservative believers to carry out such attacks. “My intention was only to expose the misuse of the type of purdah covering the face,” he said.
Rafeeque said he had incurred a loss of Rs 10 lakh and there was little option but to abandon the studio.
The police said extremist elements were suspected behind the incident, but could not identify whether any organisation was involved in the attack on the studio.
