Developing countries often do not follow the international rule of law because even domestically they have problems on the rule of law, whether it's on setting up a business, court procedure, corruption, currying favors, rules and regulations on safety etc. It's the rule of man which developing countries often practice; whoever's more powerful can ignore or override the rules of the system they are in. Like the Chinese in the bottom half of the society often lament, 弱肉强食丛林法则的社会.

They simply do not have the tradition for respecting the spirit of the rule of law. And the spirit of the rule of law is total for a mature society. You can't respect the domestic of rule of law while flouting international rule of law without pushbacks from the thinking part of the society.

And it will take some time for developing countries to cultivate a spirit for the rule of law even if they have achieved material abundance, because societal progress will always lag behind economic progress. For China, they have only enjoyed economic prosperity in recent times and it will take time for their society to mature. I'm not so naive to think that tiny Singapore can change China or Indonesia. Change can only come from within their own society.

It's about securing trade routes, since you want to talk reasonable.

This highlighted area is the lifeline of China and a rising superpower will do all it can to stop an already superpower blocking its lifeline.

China is not focusing on the east is it now? The focus is securing trade and energy route.

Although once CPEC becomes fully functional, the risk of impact on the highlighted route will be less.

Hence the American proxy war in Pakistan to bury CPEC.

Thank you for the informative response, had to read up on CPEC. Very smart, China secures access to Arabian Sea, Pakistan improves infrastructure, win-win. The thing is, Pakistan is a very willing partner in CPEC; ASEAN is not w/ the 9 Dash Line. ASEAN gains nothing, only loses.

I'm going to ask that you forget strategic partnership/favoritism for a moment, and imagine that Pakistan were situated where Vietnam is now:

Would Pakistan be fine w/ this? Would Pakistan accept the rationalizations you just gave, and go "Oh well, it's a rising superpower positioning itself, completely at our cost, such is our fate"? If not, why should ASEAN countries?

What is wrong with creating a distinct and unique Singaporean cultural identity? Many people have done it throughout history. Why are Singaporeans so psychologically weak that they have to emotionally rely on China for their identity?

How is it 'beneficial' to Singapore? Does China cut SG better trade deals just because so many Singaporeans are ethnic Chinese? I highly doubt that.

I grew up on SPAM. I can remember McDonald's have saimin and chili over rice, a couple items mainland MD do not have. Then there is Patti's Chinese Kitchen in Ala Moana Shopping Center. That place was always packed. I heard that location is closed now.

I may never be a Chinese.
But you are wrong to say Singaporean Chinese cannot give up their Singapore citizenship and return to China.
I know many who have done that and who initially regretted but are now quite happy with their decision.
Singaporeans born here but whose parents have returned to China can apply to go back.
I also know of some Indonesians who have gone back to China.

Don't be naive that a Chinese will not rob, kill or scam another Chinese just like Americans do to each other and we don't expect to be treated differently.
Singapore have advantage when dealing with China and ethnic ties and cultural affinity plays a part.
China is our largest trading partner and we are the largest foreign investor in China.
