ISLAMABAD: French President Nicholas Sarkozy expressed his country’s desire for a strategic partnership with Pakistan during a meeting with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani in Paris on Tuesday.

According to APP, the French president told the army chief that Paris would help Pakistan build the capability to meet the challenges it was facing.

Gen Kayani also met the French foreign minister, defence minister, chief of defence staff and chief of army staff, and visited the French Army Headquarters.

Later on Tuesday, the army chief briefed NATO’s top officers in Brussels about the fight against the Taliban in northwestern Pakistan, AP said.

Officials discussed plans to provide training for Pakistani officers in NATO training centres, and reviewed the status of NATO’s main supply route to landlocked Afghanistan, NATO spokesman James Appathurai said. Gen Kayani also held talks with Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. agencies

Good going. All kinds of input are welcome. We need to build a trustworthy partnership with France and other European countries.

In my humble opinion PAF will avoid the Rafale at all cost. It is high maintenanceand a complicated aircraft which has not found many buyers for this reason.I think the talks may have had something to do with Nuclear energy, Engines(??) for JF17, avionics and armaments and perhaps buying M2K5/9 at some stage although again in my view, this will only happen as a last resort.

Araz I do not refer to us buying the Rafale, I am suggesting we look at this from the Monetary view point of the MRCA competition which is billions and the fact that the Rafale might be on the guillotine in its selection. So to drum up some anxiety and plain old animosity the french are playing us for the MRCA contract.
Cozy up to Pakistan to show the Indians that we will supply your chief rival anything it wants. Knowing the Indians I bet that they are really ticked off about this sudden cozying up and may even risk blowing their selection process just to keep us from getting even a single missile.

We could be the first. Maybe it has reached to a point where France is desperately looking for customers, Who knows? But at 80+ million $ a piece, I guess Mr Zardari might have to rattle his 'Private' bank accounts to make such a purchase.

Unfortunately, that ain't happening either.

or Mr. Zardari maybe thinking of taking 10% of $80 mln. One squadron of Rafel means $150 mln in commission at least.:coffee:

They could try but the American,s record at selling planes is much better than theirs. As one MD Exec ones said"we have never lost a deal to the french and we are not about to now"(quoted by the great Pshamim). What you must understand is that the indians will not be hooked by the jealousy game. They will make a careful analysis and do what is in their favour be it rafale or not. I dont think Rafale poses that huge a problem to someone flying the latest versions of F18 or F16or even SU30MKI.
So the french, knowing their contacts with PAF are either selling them something or something is cooking. PAF will not waste its breath aimlessly.
