Kayani meets Sarkozy: France wants to be Pakistan’s strategic partner

France, Pakistan seek nuclear cooperation deal

ABU DHABI (Reuters) - France and Pakistan are negotiating a partnership including nuclear cooperation and French President Nicolas Sarkozy could travel to Pakistan in the autumn to sign a deal, a source close to Sarkozy said on Monday.

The source said talks were ongoing on a wide variety of issues including nuclear security, an extremely sensitive question since a Pakistani scientist was at the centre of the world's biggest nuclear proliferation scandal in 2004.

"We're in the process of negotiating. We've given ourselves two or three more months," said the source close to Sarkozy during a short visit by the French president to Abu Dhabi, where he will open a French military base on Tuesday.

I have looked closely at this new development of a French military base being opened in UAE. This is what troubles me the most.

I raise several concerns.

Why now? Why is France establishing a new modern large military base in the central region of the Middle East?

Surely France an imperial power is trying to re-assert it's control of Muslim lands as it once did in Lebanon/W.Syria and Algeria and other lands.

Why such a provocative and offensive move?

For a western Imperial Elite Power such as France to build a military base which will give it so much strategic military room to maneuver in the Middle East, which is located nearby the strategic Arabian/Persian Gulf, and most importantly which happens to be located 600 miles East of Mecca and Medina!

I know what happened last time France asserted it's imperial and occupational control through it's military might and trickery in the Middle East.

I don't welcome this news at all.

This is a cloaked aggressive move by France, after years of silence and cosmetic diplomacy for Middle Easterners and Muslims esp. during the Lebanon crisis were France appeared to be on the sides of Muslims in Lebanon calling for an immediate cease fire. There are now making this provocative move. I understand they may have permission by the UAE government, but who cares that government is in love with Europe and is a western sheep so no surprise there, there spark is their WILL and Strategic Planning to re-assert their control over the parts of the Middle East.

Let's not forget it has only been one generation ago, where the fathers of current the French elite ruled over Muslim lands, these people haven't changed very much.

One thing leads to another, I expect that France will try to create more military bases throughout the region, the next one may be in one of the other gulf countries, Oman, Jordan, or perhaps Algeria.

France will be first Muslim Euro country soon, way the muslim population increasing in France. But beside the point, Sarkozy is coming Pakistan during this year to sign few pacts, but main will be nuclear.

Why are we worried about france opening up an airbase in UAE? America already has a huge airbase (Al-Dhafra) outside Abu Dhabi. They already control the muslim lands; saudis are their best friends because they gave them ARAMCO; the americans already control saudi arabia...

Why is it provocative and offensive?

Nor do I see France as re-asserting control of Muslim lands - France does not have the economic and military capability to control through force any Muslim nations half a world away. They cannot replicate their colonial past.

The French are definitely seeking to increase their influence in the region, but they are doing so through negotiations and shared interests. France is actively attempting to sell NPP's to several Muslim countries for example.

So long as there are mutual interests and advantages, I see nothing wrong with France incresing its influence.
